Beavers Volleyball Setting Up A Winning Season

UMF’s Women’s Volleyball is back on the court and is setting up for a competitive season in the newly formed Sunrise Conference. After recording nine wins in 2001, Head Coach Jim Gallagher says of the season ahead, “I am pleased with what I have seen so far. This year, I see it all happening and coming together. This team has really turned around.”

Crucial to the rotation has been 5’10” senior captain Lisa Blais, an outside hitter who was named to the All-Conference Second Team back-to-back in 2000 and 2001. Blais will be reinforced this season by middle hitter Jessica Andreozzi and outside hitter Tara Pontbriand. Hot new recruit freshman Melissa Blodgett of Rumford, a five-year veteran of Junior Olympic Volleyball, is expected to round out this up and coming team.

After spending the past three years struggling to develop, Gallagher feels confident that the 2002 Beavers are headed for a breakthrough season. “We have more depth on the bench so the overall strength of the team is improved, as has the level of athleticism and aggression.”

The team hopes to take a winning season and make a serious run in the post-season tourneys. A fiery match-up will be when the Beavers face rival UMaine Machias, three-peat MAC champs, in October.
