Softball suffers setbacks at Husson

BANGOR -- The University of Maine at Farmington softball team was blanked 8-0 and 6-0 in a North Atlantic Conference twinbill at Husson College today.

The Beavers fell to 15-5 overall and 9-3 in the NAC. Farmington is scheduled for a two-day trip to Vermont with a NAC doubleheader at Castleton State College Thursday and at Johnson State College Friday. The Eagles improved to 24-10 (17-3).

In the opener, Tammie Arsen tossed a two-hitter for Husson in a game shortened to five innings due to the eight-run rule.

The Eagles led 3-0 heading into the fifth inning where they struck for five runs (three earned) in finishing off the victory. Dorothy Cameron went 2 for 2 with a triple, three runs scored and two RBI to lead Husson, while Carolyn McAvoy was 3 for 3 in the game.

Sarah Defilipp (Brewer, ME) and Breanna Conners (Madison, ME) each singled for the Beavers.

Defilipp (7-1) worked the first three innings for Farmington with six hits allowed, one walk and three strikeouts. Meagen Carman (Unity, ME) pitched 1.2 innings in relief with four hits allowed and a strikeout.

The Beavers did not fare much better in the second contest as Arsen returned to the mound to fire a four-hitter with six strikeouts and no walks.

Leading 2-0, Husson put the contest away with a four-run fourth. Cassie Berry singled three times with two RBI for the Eagles.

Defilipp, Kelly McDonough (Windham, ME), Kasey McPhail (Benton, ME) and Katelyn Ross (Belfast, ME) each singled in the loss.

Liz Bergeron (Milford, ME) took the loss for the Beavers with eight hits allowed, two walks and four strikeouts.
