Sophomore 2B/P Sarah Defilipp (Brewer, ME) and senior outfielder Lauren Overlock (Belfast, ME) were named to the 2007 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) All-Conference First Team following their outstanding performances during the 2007 campaign.

Defilipp was a two-way threat for the Beavers, hitting .353 and scoring 22 runs, good for second on the team.  On the mound, Defilipp was 7-2 with a 3.05 ERA, winning her first six decisions.  She allowed 54 hits and nine walks in 59.0 innings, striking out 42.

Overlock, the Beavers’ leadoff hitter, batted a team-bets .436 and scored a team-high 31 runs in 24 games.  She also led the team in hits (34), total bases (43), slugging percentage (.551) and on-base percentage (.516).

UMF Bows Out of NAC Softball Tourney Following a Pair of Close Losses

The UMF softball team was eliminated from the 2007 NAC Softball Tournament following a 7-5 loss to Elms and a 3-1 loss to Lasell today in second-day action.  The Beavers finish their season with a record of 15-9.

In the second round winners’ bracket game, Elms College turned a 2-1 deficit into a 6-2 lead with a five-run fourth inning and then held off a UMF rally, which produced a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, for the 7-5 win.  Megan Goodrow (Oakland, ME) had another strong game for UMF, finishing 3-for-4 (double) with three RBI, while Erin Porter (Bangor, ME) and Sarah Defilipp (Brewer, ME) added a pair of hits.

In the elimination game, Emily Slader fired a complete-game three-hitter to lead the Lasell softball team to a 3-1 win over UMaine-Farmington.  Her UMF counterpart, Defilipp, pitched well enough to win on most days, allowing seven hits and three runs in 6.0 innings, but the Beavers’ Kelly McDonough (Windham, ME) drove in the only run, while Lasell scored twice in the third and once in the fifth to secure the victory,   Elms Box    Lasell Box

UMF Softball Advances in NAC Playoffs in 9-8 Thriller

It took two extra innings and a series of comebacks, but the UMF softball team defeated Lesley, 9-8, in nine innings today to advance to the semifinals of the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Softball Championship.  The Beavers rallied four different times during the game, overcoming two, three-run deficits, until Holly Tripp (Ellsworth, ME) delivered Kelly McDonough (Windham, ME) with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.  UMF is now 14-7 overall.

Lesley scored in the top of the first, but UMF knotted the game in the bottom half when Sarah Defilipp (Brewer, ME), who pitched all nine innings to earn the win, singled and scored on an RBI single from Megan Goodrow (Oakland, ME).  Lesley added three more in the top of the second, but Farmington answered with three in the bottom of the third, highlighted by McDonough’s two-run single.

Trailing 5-4 and three outs away from opening-round elimination for the second-straight season, Lauren Overlock (Belfast, ME) led off the bottom of the seventh with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on Goodrow’s two-out single.  When Lesley went ahead, 8-5, in the eight, the Beavers answered once again, plating three runs of their own on RBI singles from Tripp and Megan McCrum (Bangor, ME) and an RBI double from Alix Raymond (W. Hartford, CT).  After holding Lesley scoreless in the top of the ninth, McDonough reached on a fielder’s choice (a failed squeeze play that erased the winning run at home) and then scored when Tripp’s groundball was mishandled.

Defilipp (9IP, 10H, 4 ER) improved to 6-1 this season, while Goodrow led the way offensively with a 3-for-4, three-RBI performance.  Box

In game two, Farmington built a 4-0 lead following a three-run fourth inning in which Overlock delivered a two-run double after scoring the game’s first run in the opening frame.  Elms rallied with a single run in the bottom of the fourth and three more in the sixth to tie the game at 4-4 and, in the bottom of the seventh, a pair of UMF errors on the same play allowed the winning run to score.  Overlock and McDonough led the Beaver offense with three hits apiece.  Box 1  Box 2
