Men's soccer drops NAC opener
CASTINE --The University of Maine at Farmington men's soccer team opened the North Atlantic Conference regular season with a 4-1 loss to Maine Maritime Academy tonight.
The Beavers (3-2 overall, 0-1 in the NAC), who defeated the Mariners 3-2 in non-conference action earlier this season, are scheduled to visit St. Joseph's College Thursday. Maine Maritime improved to 3-2-1 (1-0).
Michael Kelly (Norton, MA) tallied his first collegiate goal for the Beavers. Kelly's goal, which came off an assist by Sean Raph (Fairfield, ME), knotted the match at 1-1 at 26:49, but the Mariners netted the game's next three scores for the win.
Greg Smith scored two goals and recorded an assist for MMA. Smith gave the Mariners the lead back at 41:50 and, after a Nate Tipton insurance goal, punctuated the victory at 88:21.
Paul Dupre (Rehoboth, MA) stopped four shots for Farmington. The Beavers outshot the Mariners 25-17.
Jeff Butland registered nine saves for MMA.
