Men's soccer hit with first loss

BEVERLY, Mass. -- The University of Maine at Farmington men's soccer team suffered its first setback with a 4-1 non-conference loss to Endicott College tonight.

The Beavers (3-1) are scheduled to visit Maine Maritime Academy for its North Atlantic Conference opener Saturday.

Nile Rozie (Windsor, CT) netted his first collegiate goal on a penalty kick for the Beavers. Rozie's score cut Endicott's 2-0 halftime lead to 2-1, but the Gulls (2-3) scored two more for the 4-1 final.

Colin Doody (Wethersfield, CT) netted a pair of goals and Bryan Lee (Rockport, MA) and Ryan Coates (Wethersfield, CT) each had a score for the Gulls.

The first half was an offensive struggle as neither team was able to produce much offense through the first 30 minutes. Doody finally broke through at the 34:44 mark of the period on an 18-yard strike off a pass from Brian Connery (Boxford, MA). Threeminutes later, Connery found a streaking Lee for a header to the far post, giving the Gulls the 2-0 advantage before the half.

Out of the break, Farmington got on the board as a penalty inside the box resulted in Rozie's penalty kick and score leaving the Endicott lead at 2-1. Later in the frame, a handball inside the Farmington box resulted in a PK for the Gulls, resulting in Doody’s second tally of the game. Doody returned the favor a minute later as he made a short pass back to Ryan Coates who blasted a shot past the Beavers’ netminder to seal the Gulls second straight win in a row.

Paul Dupre (Rehoboth, MA) suffered his first setback of the year for Farmington, while backup Erik Corcoran (Gorham, NH) picked up two saves in relief.

Endicott’s Daniel Higgins (Kingstown, RI) picked up his second win of the season, making one save in 72 minutes of action while Dave Whelan (Newington, CT) finished out the final 18 minutes of the game for the Gulls in his first action of the year.
