Men's soccer knocks off Castleton

Dillon Clark

FARMINGTON -- The University of Maine at Farmington men's soccer team defeated defending conference champion Castleton State College 2-0 in North Atlantic Conference action today at Prescott Field.

The Beavers (5-4 overall, 2-1 in the NAC) are scheduled to host Colby College on Wednesday at 4 p.m. The Spartans (6-4-1, 2-1) are slated to host Williams College Wednesday.

Dillon Clark (Old Town, ME) and Daniel Horne (Bay Shore, NY) each scored a first-half goal to lead the Beavers and both were beneficiaries of the long service of Sean Raph (Fairfield, ME). Clark scored off a Raph cross at 16:34 and Horne headed in a Raph corner kick at 18:42 for the Beavers' 2-0 advantage.

Daniel Horne

The Spartans outshot Farmington 19-10 with the ever-present Josh Costa (Sutton, MA) -- six shots, four on goal -- keeping the Beaver defense on its toes. Castleton's best opportunity to score came in the 76th minute as a header by Zac Conlogue (Farmington, ME) off an indirect kick got past Farmington keeper Erik Corcoran (Gorham, NH), but was cleared out by Nick Grim (Ipswich, MA).

Corcoran stopped 12 shots in recording the shutout.

Mike Anthony (Dartmouth, MA) came away with three saves for Castleton.
