Men's soccer tipped by Bates

LEWISTON -- The University of Maine at Farmington men's soccer team was topped by Bates College 2-1 this afternoon.

Dae Ro Lee (Yongin, South Korea) scored in the second minute, heading in a cross from Peter Litwin (Concord, MA). The Bobcats then received an own goal in the 34th minute while on a determined attack on Farmington goalie Brian Lemont (Brunswick, ME), when a Beaver defender knocked the ball over the goal line while attempting to clear the ball.

Bates outshot Farmington 20-5 in the first half, but the Beavers made it more competitive in the second half, taking nine shots to Bates' seven in the final 45 minutes.

The Beavers (1-2) struck back in the second half when a free kick by Andrew Merriken (Salem, NH) from approximately 70 yards out bounced over the head of Bates first-year goalie Greg Watts (West Chester, PA) and into the back of the net.

Watts had seven saves in his collegiate debut. Lemont had six saves in the first half before giving way to Matthew Dennett (Augusta, ME), who made four saves in the second half.
