Brown, Beaudoin Highlight Men’s Soccer Conference Honorees

Alec Brown (South Berwick, ME) was named the North Atlantic Conference Rookie of the Year and Jamie Beaudoin was named the co-coach of the year to highlight the men’s soccer honorees, as announced by the conference.  Nate Ghelli (Lancaster, NH), Jeff Tatarczuk (Westbrook, ME) and Brian Lemont (Brunswick, ME) were also honored by the conference.

For Beaudoin, the Coach of the Year recognition from the NAC is his second as he was also named Coach of the Year in 2003.

Brown, who was also honored on the all-conference first team, led all rookies with six goals during conference play accounting for forty percent of the Beavers offense.  Ghelli, a second team selection, was the backbone of a defense that posted seven shutouts in 2006, and he added three goals and three assists for nine points.  Tatarczuk, also a second team selection, scored four goals and added two assists for 10 points this season, while controlling play from his midfield position.  Lemont, who earned honorable mention, finished the season with a 1.16 GAA and 6.5 shutouts.

Men’s Soccer Falls to Elms, 3-1, in NAC Semifinals

Elms College scored twice in the opening half and added an insurance goal in the second to defeat UMF, 3-1, in semifinal action of the NAC Men’s Soccer Tournament, played this afternoon at Prescott Field in Farmington.  The loss eliminated the Beavers from the tournament as they end their season with a 7-9-3 record.

Just 13 minutes into the game, Nda Kaslong knocked home a deflected direct kick, giving Elms a 1-0 lead.  Nate Ghelli (Lancaster, NH) knotted the game at 1-1 on a penalty kick at the 26:09 mark, but the Blazers responded with another goal at the 41:50 mark when Patrick Kayego scored the eventual game-winning goal on a corner kick.  Ben Masse’s goal at the 80:09 mark sealed the upset win for the seventh-seeded Blazers.

UMF held a 12-10 edge in shots, with Brian Lemont (Brunswick, ME) making three stops in goal for the Beavers.  Box Score

Ghelli’s Goal Allows UMF Men’s Soccer to Advance with 1-0 Win over Johnson St.

Senior Nate Ghelli (Lancaster, NH) scored his second goal of the season at the 53:22 mark and the defense survived over the final 36 minutes of play as the UMF men’s soccer team (7-8-3) defeated Johnson State, 1-0, this afternoon on a rainy, windy and cold morning at Prescott Field.  Ghelli’s goal, which came on a rebound of a shot by Kellen Brown (South Berwick, ME) enabled the Beavers to eliminate JSC from the postseason for the second year in a row.

The match started in steady rain and as play progressed, the weather continued to worsen.  The rain became heavier, the wind grew stronger and temperatures dropped, but the elements had little effect on the quality of play, as both teams put forth outstanding efforts in adverse conditions.  Johnson State and UMF played an even first half, with Johnson holding a 9-4 edge in shots, but the Beavers entered the break in a scoreless tie thanks in part to the strong goalkeeping of Brian Lemont (Brunswick, ME)

About 10 minutes into the second half, Kellen Brown sent a shot on goal which deflected off JSC goalkeeper Andy Lane and bounded out to Ghelli on the left wing.  After settling the ball, he slipped a shot pass a recovering Lane for the 1-0 lead.  The Badgers grew aggressive on offense from that point on, but strong play from the defense and some key plays by Lemont, particularly on corner kicks, preserved the victory.

Johnson State finished the game with a 13-9 advantage in shots and a 13-1 edge in corner kicks, including eight in the second half and five in the last 15 minutes of play.  With Elms’ 2-1, overtime victory at Husson today, the Beavers will maintain home field advantage in the semifinals of the NAC Tournament.  Box Score     Updated Stats

Campbell and Brown Earn NAC Weekly Honors

Campbell scored a pair of goals from her midfield position to lead the Beavers to a season-ending, 3-0 win over Thomas on Saturday in Farmington.  She tallied her first score at the 49:25 mark and then struck again less than 10 minutes later to seal the victory.  She finished the regular season with seven goals and two assists for 16 points, the second-highest point total on the team.

Brown picked up his second NAC award of the season following his two-goal performance in a 3-0 win over Thomas on Saturday.  Brown scored the first two goals of the game, striking once in each half of play.  He currently leads the team in points with 16 (7g, 2a).

The men’s soccer team will open postseason play by hosting Johnson State on Saturday at 1pm in the quarterfinals of the NAC men’s soccer tournament.  The women’s team will learn its postseason fate following Tuesday night’s MMA-Husson contest.

The UMF men’s soccer team (5-6-2) traveled to Castine last night for a NAC match with Maine Maritime, and came away with a hard earned 2-0 victory on the turf.

2006 MEN'S SOCCER SEASON PREVIEW

Despite losing a majority of his offensive firepower from last season, head men’s soccer coach Jamie Beaudoin is optimistic heading into the 2006 season – and with good reason.  The Beavers ended last season on a high note, knocking off Johnson State, the regular season champions, in the opening round of the NAC Tournament and witnessed significant growth in his young players as the season progressed.  He is hopeful that the increased maturity and experience will pay dividends this fall.

“The success we had late last fall should give us some confidence as we look to return to the NAC Tournament,” said Beaudoin.  “We have key players returning, but lost a great deal of our goal scoring abilities, 15 of 25 goals to be exact.  A competitive early conference schedule will test us early.”

“With the back-to-back games against top teams in the conference it can make for a long weekend if you can't find a positive result on Saturday.   Our first year class will add some overall depth off the bench which will be a plus with the back to back games and injuries which will occur.”

The 2006 Beavers’ success will start on defense and the team’s focus is on keeping the opposition off the scoreboard.  With a solid group of returning defenders, including starting goalkeeper Brian Lemont, and a strong collection of newcomers to add depth, defense should be a definitive strength this season.

“We will remain focused on keeping the ball out of our own net,” said Beaudoin.  “We are not going to win many 4-3 games so we need to be able to keep the other team off the scoreboard to be successful.”

Lemont, who will be pushed for playing time by Ben Foster, will be supported in the back by sweeper Andrew Merriken, who missed the postseason last year due to mono, but returns healthy in 2006.  Nick O’Brien, Evan Botting and Eben Baker return to their starting spots on defense and will be supported by first-years Garrett Spraugue, Tony Scala, Ryan Beam, Jason Aceto and Dan Linck.

Senior Nate Ghelli, the team’s captain, will lead a strong nucleus of returning players in the midfield.  Ghelli is a strong central midfielder and defender and will anchor the Beavers this season.  He also has the ability to score goals and is dangerous on free kicks.  Classmate Jeff Tatarczuk will join Ghelli in the midfield and is very creative on the outside.  Kellen Brown, a quick midfielder who excels in one-on-one situations, and Andy Knox, who enjoyed a strong preseason, will round out the midfield.  Peter Doolittle, Rob Cloutier, Michael Camacho, Jordan Hickey, Phineas Peake, and Ryan Pelletier will all see significant playing time and provide Beaudoin with fresh legs in the midfield.

This season, Alec Brown will be asked to take an increased role at the forward position, aided by Brian London and sophomore Gus Booth.  Both saw limited playing time last season, but returned to school fit and prepared for their increased roles this season.

“The ability to score goals as well as our depth with five back-to-back weekends are probably my biggest concerns heading into the season,” said Beaudoin.  “We had the shortest preseason in 12 years and really only had six days to put our team together, so it will be interesting to see how we respond in the first couple of games.”

The season opens on Wednesday, September 6 with a home contest vs. Lyndon State before a road trip to Framingham State on the weekend.  Once NAC play begins, Beaudoin hopes his team will be rounding into midseason form.

“Last year we lost our first five conference games and put ourselves in a hole that took until the last weekend of the season to get out of with a win and a tie,” said Beaudoin.  “The key is winning our home conference games to set ourselves up for the postseason.  The goal is to finish in the top eight and from there, anything can happen.  Last year’s experience taught us that.”

An increased chemistry this season and continual improvement on the field will go a long way towards UMF’s goals.  Of course, the ability to remain injury-free is also paramount.

“Improving every day is something we will really stress,” said Beaudoin. “Last year, we really didn't come together as a team until the beginning of October.   It takes time, if we can learn from our early frustrations when things don't go well, and keep focused on our goals, that will help us attain postseason success.”
