Conway, Etter Earn All-Conference Honors in Men’s Soccer

Senior midfielder Joe Conway (Standish, ME) and senior back Kevin Etter (Kirby, VT) have earned NAC All-Conference honors in men’s soccer.  Conway was named to the All-Conference second team, while Etter was an honorable mention pick.

Conway led the Beavers (4-9-4) in scoring this season, tallying nine goals and two assists for 20 points.  He opened the season in fine fashion, scoring two goals and two assists in a win over Lyndon State (Sept. 7) and also had two goals in a 4-1 win at Becker on Oct. 23.  Conway ended his career on a fitting note, notching UMF’s lone goal in a 2-1 loss to Mt. Ida in the NAC semifinals.

Etter served as the defensive leader for the Beavers as one of four players to start all 17 contests.  He helped UMF post four shutouts this season, including a 0-0 stalemate with top-seeded Johnson State in the NAC quarterfinals, allowing UMF to advance on penalty kicks.

UMF Men's Soccer Season Ends with 2-1 Loss to Mt. Ida in NAC Semifinals

Joe Conway (Standish, ME) gave UMF a 1-0 lead just 8:11 into the match, but Mt. Ida tied the score before the half and struck for the decisive goal at the 68:45 mark as the UMF men’s soccer team fell to Mt. Ida, 2-1, in the semifinals of the NAC men’s soccer tournament.  The Beavers’ season ends with a 4-9-4 record.

Following a handball in the box, Conway converted a penalty kick for his team-leading ninth goal of the season, but Mt. Ida converted a penalty kick of its own in the 31st minute to knot the score.  Mount Ida took its first lead of the contest, when Josh Belongie ripped a rebound past Beavers freshman goalkeeper Brian Lemont (Brunswick, Maine) in the 69th minute – a goal which proved to be the game-winner.  Mt. Ida led in shots, 22-18, and corners, 6-2.  Lemont posted seven saves for the Beavers.  Lemont and junior back Nate Ghelli (Lancaster, NH) were named to the All-Tournament team.

Men’s soccer goalie Brian Lemont (Brunswick, ME) and women’s soccer midfielder Melissa Porter (Peru, ME) were named NAC Rookie of the Week for their respective sports, helping the Beavers advance in NAC tournament play with their outstanding efforts over the weekend.

Lemont stopped six shots in goal to help UMF forge a 0-0 tie with top-seeded Johnson State in the opening round of the NAC Tournament.  Following 110 minutes of stellar play, Lemont turned away a pair of penalty kicks, allowing UMF to advance to the semifinals.

Porter entered the game 10 minutes into the second half and, less than a minute later, she converted a corner kick to give UMF its first goal – the only one needed in a 2-0 win over Thomas in NAC quarterfinal action.  It was her first collegiate goal.
