Beavers clip Machias for the 1-0
upset
Shuji Fukami’s game winning goal nine minutes into the second half led the University of Maine at Farmington to upset the top-seed University of Maine Machias 1-0 in the Sunrise Conference Men’s Soccer Championships Sunday afternoon in Farmington. The assist came from a solid cross off the foot of mid-fielder Jeff Beck.
The two teams battled it out in a physically tough game, with outstanding defense on both sides of the field. Clipper goalie Courtenay Campbell recorded five saves on 11 UMF shots, while across the muddy field, Farmington keeper Ryan Hersey chalked up three saves on nine shots.
“This was a big game and Farmington came ready for it,” said Clipper assistant coach Corey Fleming. “They fought hard to win every ball and today they were the better team.” Fleming attributed the Beaver’s win to their tough physical play, which he said shut down Machias’ talent.
“We were pretty lucky,” said UMF coach Jamie Beaudoin. “We had good senior leadership and that helped a lot.”
Beaudoin said that both good offense and defense were crucial in the win and pointed out that most play action came from the mid-field.
After Fukami connected with the net, the Beaver dam held tight to stymie any last minutes attempts by Machias to tie the game up. “Over the
years, Farmington has been known for playing tough defense,” said Beaudoin.
The tourney win advances the Beavers to the NAIA Region 10 playoffs, which begin
this Friday in Farmington. “We came, we lost, and Farmington is the team that deserves to go,” said Fleming.

Men's
Soccer Ready to Score Big in Sunrise Conference
After a .780 season, the 2001 MAC champions are back on the field and ready to score big in the newly formed Sunrise Conference. With 28 consecutive winning seasons behind them, the Beavers have set a goal to be the inaugural Sunrise champs.
According to Coach Jaime Beaudion, “Senior leadership has always been the key to the Beavers’ success; this year will be no different.” On the frontline the team is expecting strong offensive production from 2001 leading scorer and All-Conference senior David
Sithole, 2001 NAIA Scholar Athlete and team captian Brian Mawhinney, junior Adam Zukowski and senior Shuji
Fukami. At midfield, All-Conference senior Todd Chamberlain and juniors Justin
Groshon, Jeff Beck and Justin Genshel are all back and will add some proven talent to the team’s mix. After losing three starting seniors to graduation, the backfield will be a need-to-improve area but juniors Pat
Dugas, Tim Ghelli, Miles Levy and Noah Phillips, as well as sophomores Chris Vigezzi and Matt Gates, should fill the niche quite well.
In the net will be senior captain Ryan Hersey who has gained some good experience over the past two years; he will be backed up by sophomore Seabren Reeves and junior Noah Peet.
The Beavers open their regular season on the College of St. Joseph’s on September 14.
