brings brighter hopes for the team’s chances to do well at the
conference meet. Kate Dickinson, the returnee from 2003 will lead the
team with her experience and quick feet. After training and succeeding
in race walking she will make the transition back to running after a
successful spring. Joy Clark (’08) and Andra Spearrin (’06) could be
important factors; and anyone could be a surprise after a summer of
base training. “ I believe if the team stays healthy and united we
have a chance to challenge the other teams in our conference and maybe
even fight for the conference title. The most exciting thing about
this new team is that they all want to be here. It is a very motivated
group of women,” says coach Jenna Richardson. Only time will tell what
these athletes can do. As pre-season gets underway, you might see them
around town, working hard to be the best they can be!
The back to back NAC Champions (’02 & ’03) are looking forward to defending
their title during the 2004 season. Ashleigh Biette returns in goal for the
Beavers and will anchor a solid defense. Biette allowed less than one goal
per game last season (.915) and will be counted on for leadership and
consistency in the cage. Captain Jessica Deans and Mary Berry return in the
sweeper’s position. They will be looked upon to steady the defense. Berry
recorded 18 defensive saves a year ago, a top statistic in all Div. III
field hockey. The midfield will be strong with Captain Mary Sinclair and
Junior Lauren Stevens returning. They will be looked upon to control the
transition game. Junior Kristy Veazie (7goals, 4 assists) returns in the
forward line. Her ability to score goals should get the Beavers on the
scoreboard often. Other players expected to play a large role in the field
hockey teams success include Senior Becky Christiansen in the forward line,
Junior Kristen Allen in the midfield, and Junior Kristi Cochin on defense.
Newcomers looking to contribute include transfers Amanda Pullen and Katie
Gorham, along with freshman Nicole Lyons and Kristen Chambers. The Beavers
strong non-conference schedule against USM, Bowdoin, and Bates should get
them primed and ready to make a run at there third consecutive North
Atlantic Conference title.

Men's Cross Country Season Preview
The men's cross country team looks to build upon last years'
successful season. With four out of the top five Harriers returning
and the addition of four strong athletes this team should make a run
to repeat as North Atlantic Conference Champions. The team will be led
by Senior Captain and 2003 NAC runner of the year, Nick Scott of
Monmouth, ME. Also returning for the Beavers will be Junior Ben
Fletcher (Auburn, ME), Juniors Joe Fitzsimmons (Lewiston, ME), and
Drew Croteau (Durham, CT) who were selected to the 2003 All Conference
team. Rounding out the top returners is Josh Plourde, (Junior,
Winslow, ME). Fletcher took top honors for the team last season by
placing 58th of over 240 runners at the New England regional meet.
Rejoining the team will be former Sunrise and Maine Athletic
Conference All star Andrew Sweeney who sat out last season while
recovering from an ankle injury. Three solid first year runners will
add depth to this experienced team. The rookies will be led by former
Portland (ME) High standout Tharjiath (Gatdet) Ruot. Phil Jackson
(Westbrook, ME) and Jon Chin (Derry, NH) should add strength to this
talented group.
