Eight Field Hockey Student-Athletes Named to NAC All Academic Team

The UMF field hockey team was honored by having eight student-athletes selected to the North Atlantic Conference All Academic team for 2002.  They were: Fawn Albert, Megan Waterman, Lorie Welch, Angie White, Mary Kate Williams, Krystal LeClerc, Dorice Reitchel and Sarah Dailey.  The All Academic team consists of student-athletes from NAC schools who have an overall GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Field Hockey Captures Conference Title

Two weekends ago, University of Maine at Farmington Field Hockey head coach Beth Evans was complaining that her team just couldn’t score. In their previous six outings, they had chalked up only three goals.  Fast-forward to Saturday, when the second-ranked Beavers strode onto the field to face fifth-ranked Western New England College for the North Atlantic Conference field hockey finals, held at Thomas College due to snow at UMF’s home field.  Coach Evans sure wasn’t complaining on this day, as she watched her team trounce WNEC, 5-2 and bring their three-game week scoring total to 16. Yup, that’s right, 16. “I asked them, ‘Ladies, do you want to play not to lose, or do you want to play to win?’ They told me, ‘Coach, we want to play to win!’ And that’s what they did.” Evans said.  Mary Sinclair opened up scoring for the Beavers, connecting with the cage just six minutes into the game. Eager to keep things even, Western’s Heather Gaydas tapped one in, thanks to a nice assist from Adrienne Guay seconds later.  Later in the half, UMF’s agile forward Dorice Reitchel got possession at the 25 and ran it in for the break-away shot, scoring when the ball charged into the left corner of the cage to give the Beavers the 2-1 upper hand going into the break.  UMF burst out in the second, when Reitchel’s cross fell into the path of the stick of Becky Christiansen, who quickly took advantage of Western’s goalie being to far in-front of the cage. With a gentle flick of her wrist, Christiansen popped it into with 31:17 left on the clock to give UMF a 3-1 lead.  A tenacious Western paced up and down the field as UMF controlled the ball in the second, until Alyssa Katz finally managed to tip one of her many successive shots in with 13:02 remaining.  After losing last year’s NAC championship game to Husson College after leading the way for 65 minutes, the Beavers were careful to not touch the trophies before they were even passed out.  Evans called a timeout and the team regrouped for a moment for shooting out of the gate and scoring two more goals in the final eight minutes of play thanks to shots by Reitchel and Nikki Levesque.  When the buzzer sounded, the Beavers erupted, claiming their third conference title in four years 5-2 as an emotional Western and clearly defeated team walked off the field.  “We didn’t play our best,” said WNEC coach Aimée Klepacki. “We did okay in the middle but just fell apart at the end. This teams has had some ups and downs this season, this was one of those downs. But we have a young team, and we will be back next year.”  For UMF, ups and downs were not an option, winning was. “The goal for this season was to win this game, and there was no turning back,” said Evans. “When you play in a championship game, you have to have it all out there, and I think for the most part we did. We played well and we didn’t take our eye off the prize. What made us the better team was the attack.”  Sarah Dailey, the game MVP and a UMF senior said her team won because they wanted to. “We had a lot more determination and it was a good win. I’m excited to end on such a good note.”  Meanwhile UMF goalie Fawn Albert, the NAC player of the year who recorded seven saves on the day, said the teams crown meant more to her than any individual honor. After the big win, the senior Albert could only laugh at her team’s inability to score during their October drought. “We were hungry today, and I guess you could say we had the best timing.”

Field Hockey Breezes Past Simmons into Final

The UMF field hockey team scored early and often in today's semifinal game played at Gorham High School due to weather conditions in Farmington.  The Beavers opened the scoring in the first minute of play and never looked back finding the cage five more times before all was said and done.  The win gives UMF the opportunity to play in and host its third conference championship in a row.  The Beavers will face Western New England College on Saturday at Thomas College in Waterville, Maine.  The two teams did not meet in the regular season, so the match up should be an interesting one.

Field Hockey Semifinal To Be Played at Gorham High

The UMF field hockey semifinal game versus Simmons College is confirmed to be played at Gorham High School at 1:45pm on Thursday November 7th.  Directions to Gorham High School are as follows:

Interstate 95
Exit 8 - Westbrook
Take route 25... to Gorham.
Stay on route 25 till center of Gorham
Take Left at light onto Route 114 (also South St.)
Go to 2nd right/take right onto Morrill Ave.
Will see HS ahead bear right... parking and fields are in the back.

The details of when the field hockey game versus Simmons College will be played are still being worked out.  It is our intention to play the game on Thursday if weather allows.  Check back often for more information.

Field Hockey Cruises Into Semifinals

After scoring only three goals in their last six games, the University of Maine at Farmington Beavers (conference record 8-1) came out strong with offensive intensity not seen since early October, shutting out the Lasell Lasers, 5-0. "The curse has been lifted," said UMF coach Beth Evans. "The field hockey gods were angry at us for scoring so many goals early in the season, so they didn't let us score at all. Now they are back." UMF's sticks came to life early in the first half when an assist from Sarah Dailey connected with Nikki Levesque, who scored, giving the Beavers the upper hand.  Dailey came through again, helping out Dorice Reitchel who then connected with the cage for the 2-0 lead. With the clock ticking down in the first, Amanda Nimon gave the Beavers a comfortable advantage, scoring two goals in less than two minutes and bring UMF into the intermission with a 4-0 lead; Angie White and Dailey, who had an assist hat trick on the day, aided Nimon.  Early in the second, White sealed the deal, scoring the fifth and final goal to advance the Beavers into the NAC Semifinals. UMF's star goalie, and conference player of the year Fawn Albert had another spectacular performance in the cage, logging her eighth shutout of the season with 5 saves.  Chilling winds and frigid temperatures dropping the mercury down to 20 degrees couldn't stop UMF in their pursuit of a championship. "The weather didn't matter. The team really wants this championship and we have a strong focus- it's really mind over matter." Said Evans. "I told the players they should play against a team, and not against the cold. I think Lasell let themselves get cold."  Evans says that now that the gods are looking down on her program, she is expecting good things as the playoffs roll on. The Beavers will host the semis versus Simmons College at home at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at Prescott Field.

Field Hockey Loses Battle With Becker

It took penalty strokes for Becker College to get past the Beavers today after playing 100 minutes in the cold and rain.  The game was marked by even play by both teams.  Three minutes into the second overtime UMF's goalie Fawn Albert saved a penalty stroke to help send the game into strokes.  In strokes, Albert made a great save on the first attempt but was stymied by the next three Becker strokers, while the Beavers struggled to put one in the net.  UMF concludes the regular season 9-6 overall and 7-1 in the conference.  The Beavers will enter the NAC playoffs as the number two seed and host the first round on Saturday November 2nd at 2pm.  Our opponent is yet to be determined.

Field Hockey Loses 0-1 to Nationally Ranked Bowdoin

Today the UMF field hockey team faced a Bowdoin College team that is ranked 15th in the nation.  In spite of giving up an early goal the Beavers played solid defense and had several scoring opportunities.  However, the consistent play of Bowdoin kept UMF out of the scoring column.  UMF goal keeper Fawn Albert had a great game making numerous saves and faced a penalty stroke in the first half that went wide of the cage.  The Beavers return to action on Saturday when they host North Atlantic Conference opponent Becker College.  A win against Becker will solidify UMF in the #1 spot in the conference entering the playoffs.

Field Hockey Tops St. Joe's 2-0

In non conference field hockey action today, UMF's Dorice Reitchel scored two goals to give the Beavers the win.  Reitchel was assisted by freshman Mary Sinclair on the first goal and by Kelly LeClerc and Mary Berry on the second goal.  UMF out shot the Monks 15-9 with Beaver goalie Fawn Albert making 7 saves to earn the shut out.  Junior defender Megan Waterman also added a defensive save to preserve the shut out.  UMF will return to action on Wednesday when they host Bowdoin College at 3:30pm.

Field Hockey Game Ruled No Contest

The UMF field hockey game versus Thomas College on Wednesday was ruled a no contest due to the fact that the game was not completed because of weather conditions.

Field Hockey Gets Past Husson 1-0

The UMF field hockey team had another very competitive game yesterday as they defeated Husson College.  UMF won the game 1-0 off of a Dorice Reitchel goal in the second half of play.  The win, a non conference match up, improves the Beavers to 8-4 on the season.  They remain 7-0 in the conference.  UMF will face St. Joseph's College in Standish on Wednesday at 3:30pm.

Field Hockey Loses Tough One to Bates 0-1

In spite of controlling play most of the game, UMF was unable to overcome Bates' lone goal scored on a penalty corner with no time remaining in the first half.  The Beavers drop to 7-4 overall and remain 6-0 in the North Atlantic Conference.  Next up for UMF will be Husson College on Saturday in Bangor.

Beavers Field Hockey Top Elms College in 5-0 Shutout

The UMF Field Hockey team ran over Elms College of Massachusetts on Saturday, shutting them out 5-0. Senior Nikki Levesque (Farmington, ME) opened up scoring for the Beavers, connecting with the cage off an assist from freshman Kelly LeClerc (Jay, ME) just minutes into the first. Levesque hit a shot again with eight minutes on the clock thanks to a nice pass from freshman Mary Sinclair (New Sharon, ME) and then sophomore Becky Christiansen (Windham, ME) added an assist less than three minutes later to give freshman Kristin Roy (Winslow, ME) her first goal of the game.

The Beavers came out strong in the second with freshman Mary Berry (Norridgewock, ME) chipping in early in the half with an assist credited to senior Sarah Dailey (Rockport, ME). After an intense battle throughout the half, the Beavers added another with 14 seconds on the clock, with freshman Kristin Allen (Mexico, ME) chalking up a goal off an assist from junior Angie White (Farmingdale, ME). 

The Beavers out shot their opponents 18-1 with senior keeper Fawn Albert (Cornville, ME) notching one save as UMF moved to 6-0 in conference play.

Field Hockey Blasts St. Joseph's College 6-1

The UMF field hockey team demonstrated some offensive power as they defeated former conference foe St. Joseph's College 6-1.  UMF started the scoring 13 minutes into the game when Dorice Reitchel connected on an assist from freshman Mary Sinclair.  Reitchel would go on to add two more goals in the game earning the hat trick.  UMF a 3-0 advantage at half time.  Seniors Nikki Levesque and Sarah Daily each added goals for the Beavers along with junior Amanda Nimon.  Junior Megan Waterman, freshman Kristen Allen and senior Lori Welch all contributed assists on the day.  UMF goalies Fawn Albert and Ashleigh Biette combined for the win.  Next up for the Beavers will be NAC conference opponent Elms College on Saturday at UMF.

Field Hockey Makes it a Sweep in Massachusetts

The UMF field hockey team completed a sweep of conference opponents Wheelock College and Lasell College this weekend out scoring the two teams 8-1.  The Beavers defeated Wheelock on Saturday 6-0 off of goals by Dorice Reitchel (2), Becky Christiansen, Erica Gundersen and Nikki Levesque (2).  Reitchel, Sarah Daily and Kristen Allen all had assists on the day.  The shutout was UMF's fourth of the season.  On Sunday the Beavers faced Lasell College and came away with a 2-1 win.  Dorice Reitchel and Nikki Levesque scored UMF's goals while Angie White contributed an assist.  The Beavers improve to 5-3 overall and remain undefeated in conference play.  UMF returns to action on Wednesday when they host St. Joseph's College at 3:30pm.

Field Hockey Falls 0-1 to USM in Double OT

The University of Southern Maine scored six minutes into the second seven vs. seven overtime period with a high shot to left side of the cage to break a zero-zero tie and after a long match, finally sending the team on their way back to Gorham. The Beavers doubled-up their opponents in shooting during the regular play period 8-4, but a rush offensive drive with five shots by USM in overtime put them on top. Despite the score, the team had some of their best play of the season, completing long passes and showing good ball handling skills. In the cage, senior goalie Fawn Albert (Cornville, ME) recorded five saves.

Field Hockey Suffers 1-0 Loss to Colby in OT

After a back-and-forth game in which both teams had almost equal possession of the ball, the Beavers fell 1-0 off an overtime goal with five minutes to go in the 15 minute OT period. The sudden-victory goal put the Mules on top after a fast-paced game that included two frantic offensive blasts by the Beavers at the end of each half. Lead by junior Dorice Reitchel (Augusta, ME), junior Angie White (Farmingdale, ME) and an intensive overall team effort, score aside, this was one of the best matches of the season. Despite the loss, the Beavers are still 3-0 in conference play after beating Simmons, Thomas and Husson Colleges each 3-0 and 3-2 in the regular season.

Beavers Field Hockey Shut Down Husson, 3-0

Sophomore Becky Christiansen (Windham, ME) knocked in the first goal off an assist from senior Sarah Dailey (Rockport, ME) mid-way through the first half to give the Beavers an early edge over rival Husson College on Saturday afternoon. Junior Amanda Nimon (Augusta, ME) followed it up, connecting with the cage thanks to a nice pass from Christiansen minutes later to give UMF a comfortable lead. As the clock dwindled down in the UMF-dominated first, Dailey chipped in an unassisted shot to give the home team a clear 3-0 advantage with three minutes left. Junior Erica Gunderson (Bryant Pond, ME) was also cited by Coach Beth Evans as a crucial part of the Beaver offense. 

Husson returned in the second half with an offensive drive, however, the Beaver defense led by senior Krystal LeClerc (Jay, ME) stymied their opponent’s efforts in a scoreless second. Senior goalie Fawn Albert (Cornville, ME) had a commendable performance in the cage, pushing out six shots including an open penalty shot. Albert recorded her third shutout of the season as the Beavers moved to 3-0 in the conference. Also of note, good things come in threes: as the Beavers have won each of the three conference match-ups three-zip.

Field Hockey  Defeats Thomas 3-0 With Freshman Hat Trick

The Beavers (2-0) chalked up their second consecutive NAC win, shutting down Thomas College 3-0. UMF set the pace early with an unassisted goal by freshman Kelly Leclerc (Jay, ME) less than eight minutes into the first half. Freshman Kristin Roy (Winslow, ME) kept the drive alive notching up another goal for the Beavers of an assist from junior Dorice Reitchel (Augusta, ME). Freshman Mary Sinclair (New Sharon, ME) secured the win, connecting with the cage early in the second half off a nice assist from junior Erica Gunderson (Bryant Pond, ME). 

The Beavers clearly dominated the game with strong passing and good teamwork and easily managed to out shoot their opponents 13-4. The Beaver defense built a tough dam that made it nearly impossible for Thomas to get inside UMF’s 50; backing them up was senior Fawn Albert (Cornville, ME) protecting the cage and racking up four saves.

The Beavers will again take to their home field, matching up against conference rival Husson College this Saturday at 1 p.m. This contest is highly anticipated after Husson grabbed the MAC championships away from the Beavers with seconds to go in 2001.

UMF Blanks Simmons, 3-0

The Beavers were all smiles after shutting down Simmons College before a hometown crowd on today to win their first game of NAC play. After a scoreless first half, in which UMF’s offense had main control over the ball, freshman Kristen Roy (Winslow, ME) scored off a pass from fellow freshman Mary Berry (Norridgewock, ME) to break the zero-zero tie with 17:20 remaining in the second. Freshman Kelly Leclerc (Jay, ME) followed it up off an assist by junior Angie White (Farmingdale, ME) to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead. 

With two seconds left in regulation play, Berry made it clear that the Beavers mean business this season as she connected with the back of the cage thanks to a clear pass off senior Sarah Dailey (Rockport, ME) to give the Beavers a decisive 3-0 win. UMF out-shot the Sharks 14-1 with senior Fawn Albert (Cornville, ME) in the cage recording one save for the Beavers.   The Beavers return to action Thursday when the host Thomas College at 3:30pm.

Field Hockey Suffers 1-2 loss at Gordon

After a scoreless first half Gordon College jumped out to a 1-0 lead with 32:14 left in the game and added another goal with 14 minutes remaining.  UMF's Dorice Reitchel scored the Beavers' lone goal with 18 seconds remaining in the game on an assist from freshman Mary Berry.  UMF goalie Fawn Albert recorded 19 saves in the losing effort.  The Beavers will enjoy a week off before returning to action on Saturday the 15 when they host North Atlantic Conference opponent Simmons College at 1pm.

Beavers Field Hockey Team Back and Hungry

With seven new recruits combining with a team of proven veterans, UMF field hockey is back and ready to take on the challenge of moving into a new conference. The 2001 MAC Runners-Up are fresh off a winning season and a strong preseason, and veteran coach Beth Evans says she hasn’t felt this calm before a first game in years. That’s a good thing, a very good thing. 

The charge will be headed up by 3-time MAC Goalie of the Year Fawn Albert, 2001 All-Conference stars midfielder Lori Welch, midfielder Sarah Daily, forward Dorice Reitchel and 2000 MAC Rookie of the Year midfielder Angie White. Key pickups to watch include Mary Berry, Kristen Allen and Mary Sinclair, all who are expected to make major contributions to this winning team.

Team leadership will come from captains Daily, Albert and Welch, all who have high hopes for the season ahead. “We are a strong, confident team,” says Welch. “Everyone is here to play field hockey because we all love the game- that’s our common bond.”

With a strong bench and a team with their heads on the shoulders when it comes to knowing the game, Coach Evans says excitedly that, “We are pretty optimistic and excited to be part of a larger conference this year. Our goal this year is to be conference champions.”

A key game to watch will be when the Beavers battle Husson College, last years MAC champs, at 1 p.m. on Saturday September 21 at home.
