Women's soccer defeats St. Joseph's

Melissa St. Amand

FARMINGTON -- Katie Cray (Richmond, ME) and Melissa St. Amand (Windsor, ME) each scored a goal as the University of Maine at Farmington women's soccer team earned a 2-0 non-conference win over St. Joseph's College this afternoon at Prescott Field.

The Beavers (7-8-1) are scheduled to return to action Saturday at Husson University (women at 1 p.m., men to follow. The Monks (8-4-2) are slated to host Suffolk University Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Cray opened the scoring for the Beavers at 9:20. Cray's original kick was stopped by St. Joseph's goalkeeper Katye Mayo (Fairfield, ME), but the ball got away from Mayo and Cray punched the rebound in the goal.

St. Amand buried a penalty kick in the bottom right corner at 74:09 for the 2-0 final.

The Monks held a 22-7 advantage in shots for the match, but Farmington netminders Ashley Holshouser (Berwick, ME) and McKell Barnes (Durham, ME) stayed strong for the shutout. Holshouser -- who along with St. Amand were playing in their final regular-season home game -- earned the win with three saves, while Barnes stopped eight shots.

The home keepers also were helped by a little luck as St. Joseph's Elizabeth Theberge (Danvers, MA) hit the crossbar and Jessica Needham (East Bridgewater, MA) rang the post in the opening half.

Mayo stopped three shots for the Monks.
