Women's soccer ousted by Castleton

McKell Barnes

CASTLETON, Vt. -- Courtney Chadburn (North Clarendon, VT) scored two goals and added an assist as Castleton State College advanced to the North Atlantic Conference women’s soccer championship with a 6-0 win over University of Maine at Farmington in the semifinal round Saturday at Spartan Stadium.

Farmington’s season ended at 8-10-1. Castleton will host the NAC Championship game Nov. 7 versus the winner of the other semifinal game featuring Husson and Maine Maritime. Top-seed Castleton will take an 11-5-2 record into the game.

Ashley Ledoux (Swanton, VT) opened the scoring in the 15th minute of play, striking from 25 yards out for her sixth goal of the season.
Ledoux received a five-yard pass from Maria Arnot (Milford, NY) and Ledoux struck a rocket just inside the far post.

Chadburn made it 2-0 off a Ledoux assist just three minutes later. An indirect kick from the six-yard line was awarded when a Farmington player was called for a dangerous play on the goal line. Ledoux touched it toward Chadburn, who slipped it under the dive of Farmington keeper McKell Barnes (Durham, ME).

Ashley Holshouser

Kelly Gerken (Scottsville, NY) gave Castleton a 3-0 lead when she corralled a turnover inside the 18-yard box and struck for her second goal of the season. Sarah Ethier (Portsmouth, RI) scored the first of her two goals of the game on a nifty hook up from Chadburn. Chadburn slipped a pass back to Ethier who scored from 24 yards out inside the upper-90.

Chadburn and Ethier each scored unassisted tallies in the second half for the final margin.

Barnes was tested the entire 80 minutes she played, stopping 12 shots on net before giving way to Ashley Holshouser (Berwick, ME) for the final 10 minutes. Barnes made nine saves in the first half alone, as the Spartans applied early pressure, rifling off 20 of their 31 shots over the first 45 minutes of play.

Cady Kerin (Barre, VT) stopped the lone shot that came her way to record the shutout. Castleton has yet to yield a goal in nine games (8-0-1) at Spartan Stadium this year, outscoring their opponents 28-0.
