Women's soccer opens with loss
WATERVILLE -- The University of Maine at Farmington women's soccer team lost its season opener this afternoon with a 3-0 decision to Colby College.
Nikki Pickering (Keene, NH) was all the offense Colby needed as she scored three times.
Pickering, a first-year player, came off the bench and scored her first collegiate goal off a pass from junior midfielder Meghan Edwards (East Brunswick, NJ) with 12:14 left in the first half to give Colby (2-0) the lead at intermission.
Despite a 28-9 advantage in shots by the Mules, Farmington (0-1) kept the game close behind 16 saves from sophomore goalkeeper Mckell Barnes (Durham, ME).
Pickering got an unassisted insurance goal with 16:52 to play in the game and added her third tally with just 12 seconds to go.
Senior captain Rachel Freierman (Cambridge, MA) stopped five shots and earned her second straight shutout.
