Women's soccer downed by USM
GORHAM -- The University of Southern Maine
women's soccer team scored once in each half en route to a 2-0 victory over the
University of Maine Farmington in a non-conference match Wednesday afternoon at
the USM Soccer Field.
The win was the third in the last four matches for the Huskies, and evens their
overall record at 3-3-0. The Beavers slip to 1-3-0 on the season.
Southern Maine jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute as senior forward
Natasha Levandowski (Portland, Maine/Scarborough) received a through
pass from senior midfielder Samantha Rennie (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne)
and directed a 12-yard shot past UMF senior
goalkeeper Kerry Kowalczyk (Topsham, Maine).
The Huskies rolled up a 7-0
advantage in shots and had six corner kicks in the opening half, but were unable
to find the net again over the last 40 minutes.
UMF had the better run of play to open the second half, but the USM defense
allow a shot on goal.
Junior forward Whitney Huse (Falmouth, Maine) gave the home side an
insurance marker in the 73rd minute when she tapped home the rebound of shot off
the left post taken by junior midfielder Andrea Blanchette (Hodgdon, Maine).
Blanchette's shot eluded UMF keeper Ashley Holshouser (Berwick, Maine),
a second-half substitute for Kowalczyk, but ricocheted off the post to Huse in
the six-yard box.
The Beavers' best opportunity to score came late in the game, but sophomore
Amber Murphy's (Manchester, N.H.) shot slid just wide of the left post.
Junior Alison Bradley (Auckland, New Zealand) and senior Meghan
Ibar (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) split the goalkeeping chores for USM,
each playing a half. Neither was credit with a save.
Kowalczyk had two saves and Holshouser registered one stop.
The Huskies return to action on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) when they host the
University of Massachusetts Boston in a Little East Conference match. The
Beavers will travel to Elms College on Saturday (3:00 p.m.).
