Campbell Caps Stellar Career With Second Academic All-America Award

Senior Erin Campbell (Hampden, ME) has been named a 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American, the second time she has earned the honor in her career.  Campbell is the lone student-athlete from a Maine college to receive the honor at the University (Division I) or College (Division II/III) level.  Campbell, a second team selection this season, was also an Academic All-America pick following the 2004 season.

Women’s Soccer Advances Past Elms and Into NAC Finals

Following 110 minutes of even, hard-fought soccer, ending in a 0-0 draw, the UMF women’s soccer teams advanced to the finals of the 2006 NAC Women’s Soccer Tournament by edging top-seeded Elms, 4-3, on penalty kicks.  The fourth-seeded Beavers avenged a 3-0, regular season loss to Elms and advance to the conference finals for the third time in the last four seasons.

Junior goalkeeper Alix Raymond (West Hartford, CT) stopped five shots and senior defender Susan Murray (Salem, NH) netted the game-winning goal in the sixth round of penalty kicks.

"I was so nervous before my turn to kick,” Murray said. “Our captain Erin (Campbell) calmed me down and I was able to score. It was definitely nerve-wracking.”

“This was just a great college soccer game,” Maine-Farmington 11th-year head coach Bob Leib said. “I told our players they had better be ready for penalty kicks because I really felt that was what this game was going to come down to.”

Ashley Tetrault (Spencer, MA) scored an opportunistic goal midway through the second half to lift the UMF women’s soccer team to a key, 1-0 win over Maine Maritime Academy today at Prescott Field in Farmington.  Tetrault’s tally highlighted a strong effort today by the Beavers, who controlled play but failed to convert several key chances prior to the goal.  With the win, UMF moves to 8-3-0 in conference play (11-6 overall) and into a tie for fourth place – one game behind Maine Maritime (8-4-2, 7-2-1) for third.

Tetrault’s unassisted goal came following a hustle play from sophomore Danielle Glover (Carthage, ME), who knocked the ball loose from the MMA goalkeeper, allowing Tetrault to corral it and score from five yards out.  Glover’s play was one of many strong efforts from the Beavers, who nearly struck in the first half when Melissa St. Amanda (Windsor, ME) rattled the post off a cross from Julie Walters (Wells, ME).   Box Score

Campbell’s Play Lifts UMF Women’s Soccer to 2-0 Win Over Becker

Following a collision in front of the goal, an opportunistic Erin Campbell (Hampden, ME) scored from about 25 yards out for the game’s first goal as the UMF women’s soccer team recorded a key, 2-0 win over Becker in NAC action at Prescott Field in Farmington.  Campbell also assisted on the insurance tally.  The win improves Farmington’s record to 10-5 overall and 5-2 in conference play.

WOMEN'S SOCCER LOOKING TO HIT STRIDE AGAIN IN 2006

At the end of the 2005 season, the UMF women’s soccer team was playing as well as it had all season.  Peaking at the right time, the Beavers advanced to the NAC title game with a pair of shutouts over Thomas (2-0) and Bay Path (3-0), before falling to Castleton, 2-1, in the championship game.   Heading into that game, UMF posted a 9-1-1 record and will look to build upon that late-season success in 2006.

Forwards

The Beavers’ success last season relied on the potent scoring duo of NAC Player of the Year Jodie Welch (19g, 5a – 43 pts.) and Erin Campbell (9g, 6a – 24 points) but Welch has departed, meaning that Campbell will be the focus of opposing teams this season.  While Welch and Campbell provided the majority of the offense last season, Olivia Irons (5g. 4a – 14 pts.) enjoyed a strong first season with UMF and will likely see more time up front.  A pair of first-year standouts - Llia Conway
and Jackie Mrazik – will add depth and push for starting roles.

“We need to identify another reliable goal scorer to compliment Erin this season,” said head coach Bob Leib.  “We have several talents players with the ability to find the net and the key will be to get them adjusted to their new roles.”

Midfield

The midfield will be in good hands this season with Heidi Parker, Julie Walters, and Melissa Porter as the mainstays.  Parker was one of just six players to start all 20 matches last season, totaling one goal and three assists for five points.  Walters and Porter both showed flashes of their talent as first-year players last season and will see increased roles in 2006.  Porter, in particular, made her mark in the postseason by scoring in each of UMF’s NAC Tournament victories.

“We have a solid group of midfielders back from last season, which is reassuring,” said Leib.  “We’ll rely on them heavily to control play and put our forwards in good position to score.  Their speed and ability to pass will be important this season.

Back

The defense, which allowed just 16 goals last season, returns Amanda Byrne, Katie SchwarZ, Heidi Jackson and Megan McCrum, while Melissa Demerchant (league-best 0.54 GAA) will be back in goal.  The Beavers feature a perfect blend of speed, skill and toughness in the back and, should the opposing offense happen to slip through, one of the best goalkeepers in the league.  Schwarz missed last season with a knee injury, while Jackson and Byrne form a potent speed combination, with Jackson especially skilled at marking.  McCrum is the vocal leader in the back.

“We are pretty much set on defense with our returning starters,” said Leib.  “Defense is a key for any team’s success and I think we are in good shape here.”

The Beavers face some early-season tests with regional powers Colby and Wheaton – matches that will likely show their benefit during the heart of NAC play.

“I like our combination of depth and team speed,” said Leib.  “We set up our schedule so that we will be tested early and, after a few weeks, I think we will be right in the thick of the battle for the NAC championship.”

If 2006 is anything like last year, the Beavers know just when it is time to peak.
