Castleton State Beats
UMF, 2-1, for NAC Women’s Soccer Title
Top-seeded Castleton State defeated UMaine-Farmington, 2-1, this
afternoon in the NAC Women’s Soccer Championship in Castleton, VT. The
Crusaders jumped out to a 2-0 lead through the first 32 minutes and
although UMF’s Olivia Irons (York, ME) converted a penalty kick
at the 32:43 mark, the Beavers were unable to score the equalizer over
the final 58 minutes of play.
UMF
outshot Castleton, 15-13, and received an eight-save effort from
Melissa Demerchant (Presque Isle, ME), but fell short in its attempt
to unseat the regular season champs. Jodie Welch (Wells, ME),
Molly Hagstrom (New Sharon, ME) and Amanda Byrn (Winslow, ME)
were named to the All-Tournament team.

WELCH NAMED NAC WOMEN’S
SOCCER PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Jodie
Welch (Wells, ME)
was named the 2005 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Player of the Year,
as announced today by the league office in a vote among head coaches.
Welch was also one of five Beavers to earn All-Conference honors.
Welch finished yesterday’s game vs. Bay Path with 43 points (19g, 5a),
ranked fourth in the league in points, goals and points per game. She
has scored at least one point in 14 of 19 games this season and scored
multiple goals on three occasions, including a pair of hat tricks. Thus
far in the postseason, she assisted on both goals in a 2-0 quarterfinal
win over Thomas and added a goal and assist in a 3-0 win over Bay Path,
factoring in on five of the Beavers’ six postseason scores.
Earning Second Team All-NAC honors were goalkeeper Melissa Demerchant
(Presque Isle, ME), back Amanda Byrne (Winslow, ME) and
midfielder Molly Hagstrom (New Sharon, ME). Demerchant is the
NAC’s top goalkeeper, posting a 0.43 GAA this season, including shutouts
in five of her last seven outings. Byrne, in her first season, has
started all 19 games in the back, contributing two assists, while
headlining a defense that has allowed just 14 goals in 19 matches.
Hagstrom has scored a goal and assist for three points this season, but
has been a controlling force in the midfield both offensively and
defensively. Forward Erin Campbell (Hampden, ME) earned
Honorable Mention honors for her offensive output (9g, 6a – 24 pts.).

UMF Women’s Soccer
Headed to NAC Finals Following 3-0 Win over Bay Path
Olivia Irons (York, ME)
scored at the 22:19 mark, while Melissa Porter (Peru, ME) and
Jodie Welch (Wells, ME) added second-half scores to lead the UMF
women’s soccer team (12-4-3) to a 3-0 victory over Bay Path in NAC
Women’s Soccer Tournament semifinal action this afternoon at Prescott
Field. The Beavers controlled play throughout, holding a 21-3 advantage
in shots, to advance to the NAC finals vs. top-seeded Castleton State,
which beat Maine Maritime, 2-0, this afternoon. Each of the first two
goals were set up by Megan McCrum (Bangor, ME), who sent a pair
of brilliant passes into the box from the midfield. The final goal,
Welch’s team-leading 19th of the season, came on a header off
a direct kick from Irons.

NAC Weekly Awards
Men’s soccer
goalie
Brian Lemont (Brunswick, ME) and women’s
soccer midfielder Melissa Porter (Peru, ME) were named
NAC Rookie of the Week for their respective sports, helping the
Beavers advance in NAC tournament play with their outstanding
efforts over the weekend.
Lemont stopped
six shots in goal to help UMF forge a 0-0 tie with top-seeded
Johnson State in the opening round of the NAC Tournament.
Following 110 minutes of stellar play, Lemont turned away a pair
of penalty kicks, allowing UMF to advance to the semifinals.
Porter entered
the game 10 minutes into the second half and, less than a minute
later, she converted a corner kick to give UMF its first goal –
the only one needed in a 2-0 win over Thomas in NAC quarterfinal
action. It was her first collegiate goal.

UMF
Women’s Soccer Knocks Off Thomas, 2-0, in NAC Quarterfinals
Second-seeded UMF scored a pair of second-half goals to beat Thomas,
2-0, in NAC quarterfinal action this afternoon at Prescott Field in
Farmington. After a scoreless opening half, Melissa Porter, who entered
the game less than a minute earlier, re-directed a Jodie Welch corner
kick at the 57:41 mark for a 1-0 lead and Erin Campbell finished off the
scoring in the 75th minute, converting a pass from Welch.
The Beavers outshot Thomas, 27-1, but ran into another strong
performance from Thomas GK Shannon Proctor, who stopped four shots. UMF
is now 11-4-3 this season and will host Bay Path on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at
2:00 pm.
UMF Women's Soccer to Host NAC
Quarterfinals on Saturday vs. Thomas
The UMF women's soccer team (10-4-3, 9-1-2 NAC)
finished second in the regular season standings and, as the No. 2
seed, will host Thomas College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Prescott
Field. The Beavers upended Thomas, 4-0, on Oct. 15 in
Waterville.

Welch Leads UMF Women’s Soccer Past Becker, 6-0
Wells native Jodie Welch scored twice in the first 10 minutes of
action to key the UMF women’s soccer team (10-4-3 overall, 9-1-2 NAC)
to a 6-0 win over Becker this afternoon in Leicester, MA. Welch
scored an unassisted goal at the 7:55 mark and then delivered on a
feed from Heidi Parker just over a minute later (8:56) for her
team-leading 18th goal of the season. Olivia Irons,
Bailly Hovey, Susan Fitton and Mari Kimball added goals for the
Beavers, who held a 27-1 edge in shots.

Women’s Soccer Scores Early in 1-1 Tie with Elms
Olivia
Irons scored off a feed from Kelsey Burk just 2:31 into the match, but
it was only goal UMF would score in a 1-1, double overtime tie with Elms
College this afternoon in Chicopee, MA. Irons’ second goal of the
season gave the Beavers (9-4-3 overall, 8-1-2 NAC) a lead until the 41st
minute, when Elms’ Chelsea Rose struck to tie the match. Neither team
was able to score the decisive goal the rest of the way. Farmington
held a 12-8 edge in shots, including a 5-0 advantage in overtime, and
took six corner kicks. Melissa Demerchant stopped four shots in goal
and was aided by a key defensive save that kept the tie intact.

USM Edges UMF in
Women's Soccer Action, 1-0
The University of
Southern Maine's Liz Brunton scored the game's lone goal at the 26:43
mark as the UMF women's soccer team fell, 1-0, in Gorham this afternoon.
The Beavers (9-4-2) mustered just three shots all afternoon, but
remained in the game with a strong defensive effort that limited USM to
eight shots of its own.
Jackson Earns NAC
Weekly Honors
Heidi Jackson, a
freshman back from York, was named the NAC Women’s Soccer Rookie of the
Week for her standout defensive effort in limiting both Maine Maritime
and Thomas to five shots apiece in a 2-0-0 week for the Beavers.
Jackson has started 11 of 13 games this season and has played a large
role in a UMF defense that has yielded just 12 goals in 13 contests thus
far.

Women's Soccer Records 4-0
Victory over Thomas
After playing to a scoreless tie through the first
half, the UMF women's soccer team exploded for four goals in the
second half to beat Thomas this afternoon in steady rain in
Waterville. Jodie Welch netted a hat trick for the
Beavers, who scored all four of their goals in the final 16 minutes
of play. The win improves the Beavers' record to 9-3-2
overall and keeps them in the hunt for the NAC's top spot with
a 8-1-1 league mark.

Women's Soccer Edges MMA, 1-0
Reigning NAC Player of the Week Jodie Welch scored
at the 33:29 mark, off an assist from Molly Hagstrom, to propel the
UMF women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Maine Maritime last
night in Castine. The Beavers controlled the match, outshooting
MMA 18-6, and used a standout defensive effort to secure the victory.
With the win, UMF is now 8-3-2 overall.

Player, Rookie of the Week Awards
Following a successful weekend of action, the UMF
Beavers picked up three NAC Player of the Week awards. In
women's soccer, Jodi Welch of Wells scored four goals in a 2-0-1 week
to earn NAC Co-Player of the Week honors. She scored the
game-tying goal to forge a 2-2 tie with Lyndon State, scored the only
goal, in overtime, to lift UMF past Baypath, 1-0, and finished the
week with a two-goal effort in a 9-1 win vs. Wheelock. In
addition, freshman Amanda Byrne of Winslow, who assisted on Welch's
game-winning goal vs. Baypath, earned Rookie of the Week honors.

Knocks Off Wheelock
The UMF Beavers (7-3-2) scored four
times in the first 16:29 of play on their way to a 9-1 win over Wheelock.
Kelsey Burk started the scoring at the 4:35 mark and Jodie Welch scored
the game-winner at 10:23 off a feed from Erin Campbell, who finished the
day with a goal and two assists. Angela Kendall scored the Beavers'
final three goals to secure the victory.

Women's Soccer Edges
Defending Champ Baypath, 1-0, in OT
The women's soccer team received a goal
at the 99:36 mark from Jodie Welch to defeat Baypath, the 2004 conference
champion, 1-0 on Saturday in Farmington. The goal, set up by Amanda
Byrne, allowed the Beavers to improve to 6-3-2 overall. Melissa
Demerchant turned away two shots in goal to preserve the win.

Women's Soccer Battles to a 2-2
at Lyndon State
The women's soccer team battled to a 2-2 tie at Lyndon State College
on Wednesday evening. UMF (5-3-2) returns to action on
Saturday when it host the North Atlantic Conference preseason
favorite Bay Path College at 3:30 p.m. at Prescott Field.

Women's Soccer Defeats
Lesley
The UMF women's soccer team defeated host Lesley University 6-0 on
Saturday night. The Beavers were led by junior Jodie Welch who
scored a hat trick all in the second half. UMF held a 1-0 lead
after the first period after Heidi Parker scored off of a cross from
Erin Campbell. The second period was all Beavers as they rattled
off 5 goals in just under 30 minutes. Other goal scorers for UMF
were Kelsey Burk and Angela Kendall. Burk also added two
assists. Campbell notched 4 assists while Burk handed out 2. UMF goalkeeper Lindsay Shumway made 2 saves in her
first collegiate start and Melissa Demerchant had one save in relief
of Shumway. The Beavers improve to 5-3-1 overall and 4-1-1 in
the NAC.

Women's Soccer Loses to St.
Joseph's in Overtime 1-2
In today's evenly matched non-conference battle, the UMF women's
soccer team was defeated by visiting St. Joseph's College 1-2 in
overtime. After fighting through a scoreless first period, the
Beavers scored the first goal of the game when Erin Campbell connected
on a pass from Jodie Welch. UMF held the 1-0 advantage for less
than 10 minutes when St. Joe's evened the total at 1-1. The
score remained tied through the end of regulation. UMF had
several quality looks at the net, but it was the Monks who scored the
game winner when a shot rebounded off of UMF goalkeeper Alix Raymond
and another St. Joe's player played the ball into the net. UMF
outshot the Monks 15-13. The Beavers now stand at 4-3-1 overall.

Women's Soccer Defeats
Mount Ida
The UMF women's soccer team defeated visiting Mount Ida College 8-1
today in Farmington. Mount Ida scored their lone goal, the first
of the game, at the four minute mark. But the Beavers roared
back to score 8 unanswered goals to take the North Atlantic Conference
match. Goal scorers for UMF were Julie Walters (2), Jodie Welch
(2), Erin Campbell, Susan Fitton, Bailly Hovey and Kathrina Berger.
UMF goalkeepers Melissa Demerchant, Alix Raymond and Lindsay Shumway
split time in the net. UMF improves to 4-2-1 overall and 3-1-1
in the NAC.

Women's Soccer Battles
Lasell to a 0-0 Draw
The UMF women's soccer team dominated play in today's North Atlantic
Conference match up with Lasell College, but was unable to overcome a
0-0 tie after two overtime periods. The Beavers outshot Lasell
14 to 7 and held a 7-0 corner kick advantage. UMF goalkeeper
Mellissa Demerchant mad 5 saves to preserve the shutout. The
Beavers return to action tomorrow when they host Mount Ida College at
2pm. UMF stands at 3-2-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the NAC.

Women's Soccer Defeats
Husson 1-0
The UMF women's soccer team defeated visiting Husson College 1-0 today
in North Atlantic Conference action in Farmington. UMF captain
Heidi Parker netted the game winner at the 37:24 mark. The
Beavers kept the offensive pressure on most of the game out shooting
Husson 17-1 and forcing 8 corner kicks to Husson's 4. UMF
improves to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the NAC. The Beavers return
to action on Saturday when they host Lasell College and again on
Sunday when they host Mount Ida College.

Women's Soccer Loses To
Castleton State 1-2
The UMF women's soccer team was defeated by visiting Castleton State
College 1-2 today in Farmington. The teams played through a
scoreless first half with the Beavers in control taking 9 shots to
Castleton's one. However, it was Casleton who broke the barrier
first in the second period. Minutes later UMF's Jodie Welch
answered for the Beavers when she connected on a pass from Amanda
Byrne. Castleton gained the advantage a few minutes later in
what turned out to be the game winner. UMF made a valiant effort
in the final five minutes of the game forcing several corner kicks,
but was unable to even the score. UMF stands at 1-1 in the NAC
and 2-2 overall. The Beavers return to action on Wednesday when
they host rival Husson College at 4pm.

Women's Soccer Defeats
Johnson 2-1
The UMF women's soccer team defeated visiting Johnson State College
2-1 today in Farmington. The Beavers scored the first two goals
of the game, one in each half. Kelsey Burk put the Beavers on
the board early in the first period and Jodie Welch added the game
winner midway through the second period. Johnson's lone goal
came off of a penalty kick in the second period. UMF stands at
2-1 overall and 1-0 in the NAC. The Beavers return to action
tomorrow when they host Castleton State College at 2pm.

Women's Soccer Battles
Colby to 3-1 Loss
The UMF women's soccer team took a 1-0 lead at the 18:46 mark on a
penalty kick by first year player Olivia Irons. However, Colby
answered less than a minute later to even the score. The teams
battled through almost 70 more minutes tied 1-1 before Colby scored on
a shot from just inside the 18. The Beavers regrouped to add to
the offensive attack and in doing so left a hole for Colby to score a
third goal at the 89:12 mark. UMF goalkeeper Melissa Demerchant
made several spectacular saves to keep the Beavers in this game
turning away 9 of Colby's 12 shots on goal. UMF stands at 1-1
overall and will return to action on Saturday when they host
Johnson State at 3:15pm.

Women's Soccer Shuts Down Machias
UMF junior captain Erin Campbell's hat trick led the Beavers to a 5-0
victory over visiting UMaine Machias today in Farmington. Jodie
Welch chipped in with a goal and an assist. Molly Bell added
another goal and Bailly Hovey and Olivia Irons handed out assists to
round out the offensive push. UMF stands at 1-0 on the season
and returns to action on Wednesday when they host Colby College at
4:30pm.

Women's Soccer Season
Preview
The 2005 UMF women's soccer team has the potential to be one of the
best teams in the North Atlantic Conference and should be an exciting
team to watch during the season. A fine nucleus of veterans who
won the NAC title in 2003 returns ready for a run at the conference
championship again. They will be complimented by a fine core of
freshmen who will make this one of UMF' quickest teams ever.
Veteran scorers Erin Campbell and Jodie Welch will lead the attack.
Veteran midfielders Molly Hagstrom, Heidi Parker and Kelsey Burk will
compliment the attack and aid the defense anchored by Mari Kimball and
Megan McCrum. Melissa Demerchant, Kerry Kowalczyk, Alix Raymond
and Lindsay Shumway will give much depth in the goal.
Newcomers Julie Walters, Olivia Irons and Kat Berger will bring speed
to the midfield and Amanda Byrnes and Heidi Jackson will add speed to
the backfield. Veterans Holly Pelletier, Molly Bell, Bailly
Hovey, Sue Fitton, Susan Murray and Angie Kendall will give the
Beavers much needed depth for the run a the NAC championship and a
berth in the NCAA tournament.
