FARMINGTON -- The University of Maine at Farmington women's cross country team rolled to first place at the UMF Invitational at Mt. Blue High School today.
The Beavers accumulated a perfect score of 15 followed by Green Mountain College (58) and Maine Maritime (70).
Molly Carl (York, ME) edged out teammates Emily Farley (Bernard, ME) and Salena Sykes (Island Pond, VT) for the individual 5K title. The trio's sprint to the finish line featured Carl (21:47.30) nipping Sykes (21:47.65) and Farley (21:47.93) by tenths of a second.
Caitlin Miller (Pepperell, MA) and Meaghan Champagne (Littleton, NH) finished fourth and sixth, respectively to complete the Beavers' scoring. Miller was at 22:01.08 and Champagne 23:03.34. Thomas' Laura Coyne (Saco, ME) broke up the all Farmington top five in fifth at 23:02.94, but the Terriers did not have a team score.
The Beavers are scheduled to visit Colby College next weekend, while the Mariners and Terriers are off. Johnson State and Green Mountain are slated to run in the Vermont State Championships next Saturday in Johnson, Vt.
