Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams Continue Winning Tradition

In just four years of existence the men’s and women’s cross country programs at the University of Maine at Farmington have proven they will be a force to be reckoned with for many years to come.  This year, coaches Arvid and Kelley Cullenberg have guided these hugely successful programs and carried them further into the record books.  The women’s team, led by Academic All American Kate McGuire, has compiled four Maine Athletic Conference Championships and on Saturday November 3rd captured it’s second Regional Championship earning a trip to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics National meet.  Although this is the first national bid for the team, the UMF women have sent individual runners to nationals in each of the last four years. As UMF prepares for a challenging national meet Coach Arvid Cullenberg considers this team to be a contender for a top 20 finish.  “Our women have been having fun and running hard all season and I am sure they will do more of the same in Wisconsin.  Kate has seen this chance slip away in the last 2 years.  Her drive to win is unmatched and hopefully she can summon another lifetime personal record at nationals.”  In 1999 the #1 ranked women were edged out by Lyndon State College when a team member was injured on the course.  Last year UMF won the regional race, however, there were not enough teams competing in the meet to earn an automatic qualification to nationals.  Realizing this history, four of the seven women running for UMF on Saturday set lifetime personal records.  “All of our women ran incredibly smart races.  This course had a couple of strategically placed hills.  We negotiated them extremely well, not going out too fast, gaining places on other teams as the race progressed” commented Coach Cullenberg. The back-to-back Maine Athletic Conference Champions men’s team overcame several setbacks this season to show they had the depth to back up a number two regional ranking.  Finishing in second place, the Beavers drew on all of their resources to stay close to a very strong Lyndon State team.  “We knew Lyndon would be fast. We were counting on our men to meet the challenge, which they did,” noted Cullenberg.  The UMF men received a surprise breakout performance from first year runner, junior Brett Almasi.  Almasi’s time of 28:31 captured 7th place overall and earned him the honor of being UMF’s first male runner to compete at nationals.  “Brett has shown the potential to have this kind of performance all year.  It was nice to see him step up when the team really needed it most,” said Cullenberg. The national championship meet will be held in Kenosha, Wisconsin on Saturday November 17th.
