Farley Earns NAC Weekly Honors For Third Time

Drew Croteau (Durham, CT), Emily Farley (Mount Desert Island, ME) and Kaeleigh Barker (Chicester, NH) have earned weekly honors from the North Atlantic Conference (NAC), as announced today by the league office.  Croteau was named the Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week, Farley earned Women’s Cross Country Rookie of the Week honors for the third time this year, and Barker was honored as the Field Hockey Player of the Week.

Croteau, competing at the UMF Invitational, ran a 28:52.82 over the hilly, 4.97-mile course at Mt. Blue HS on Saturday to finish in second place among 49 runners in the highly-competitive field.

Farley, for the third time in as many competitions, was the top UMF finisher, this time racing to a fifth-place finish at the UMF Invitational.  Farley posted a time of 21:09.04, just :35 behind the top finisher.  Thus far in her collegiate career, she has posted top 10 finishes in all three of her races.

Barker was perfect in goal during a 2-0 week for UMF, spearheading a defense that held a pair of NAC opponents scoreless.  In a 2-0 win over Husson on Sunday, Barker turned away 11 shots to preserve the victory after the Braves held a 13-4 advantage in shots in the opening half.  She leads the NAC in goals against average (GAA), posting a 0.40 mark through five contests.

UMF WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY AIMS FOR THREE-PEAT WITH YOUNG, BUT TALENTED SQUAD

The UMF women’s cross country team, under the direction of then first-year head coach Katie Herbine, put forth one of the most impressive team efforts in any sport in NAC history last season, placing five runners among the top nine finishers (including four of the top five) in capturing its second-straight conference championship.  The core of last season’s successful team returns, and the goals are high once again.

“We have a great core of returning athletes with five student-athletes who have college running experience,” said Herbine. “Add to that eight first-year runners with strong high school running resumes and we have a real good mix of talent and experience.”

Leading the charge is senior Kate Dickinson, who finished second to graduated teammate Andra Spearrin at last year’s NAC meet.  Dickinson is the favorite in the NAC this season based on her effort last fall and is also the leader of this year’s UMF squad.  She grew stronger as the season wore on last year – a positive sign heading into the 2007 season.

Sophomore Teri Slawek will be a key runner this season after an impressive inaugural season in 2005 that included a fourth-place finish at the NAC meet and multiple NAC Rookie of the Week awards.

“I expect Kate Dickinson to continue her fantastic running career,” said Herbine. “She is a three-year captain and she, Sam Posey, Terri Slawek and Emily Weston were interchangeable last season running in the two through five positions. I also expect Kendra Pouliot to get stronger and stronger as the season progresses and step
in to fill out our scoring positions.”

Posey, who finished fifth at the NAC meet behind Slawek, should also improve with a season of collegiate competition under her belt.  There will also, of course, be opportunities for the first-year runners to make their mark.

“We have a great recruiting class coming in and/or running for the first time this season,” said Herbine. “I expect the younger runners to learn from the experienced runners on the team and develop over the course of the season, which will allow us to have a good showing and compete well at our conference championship and Regional meet at the end of the season.”

With a string of success at the conference meet that includes seven conference championships in the last eight years, the other NAC schools will look to close the gap on UMF, which won’t be easy following last season’s showing.  That being said, the Beavers will be running with the proverbial bull’s eye on their back whenever they compete with conference foes.  UMF, the conference standard bearer, has also served as a motivating force for the league’s other teams.

“I think we will stack up well against the other NAC teams this year,” said Herbine. “As the two time conference champs it will be important for the team to continue to improve. The other NAC teams are improving with each meet and each season so it is important for UMF to do the same in order to stay competitive in the conference.”

As with any team, injuries remain a concern for Herbine, as 11 of her 13 runners are in their first or season season with the program.  That youth will be tested early and make the leadership of veterans Dickinson and Pouliot critical.

“Injuries are always a concern especially with a young team not used to the rigors of college running,” said Herbine. “We hope to ease the team into a solid training program and progress steadily throughout the season to peak for the key meets at the end of October into November.”

The season begins on Saturday, Sept. 9 with a meet at UNE in Biddeford and continues two weekends later (Sept. 23) at Gordon.  On Sept. 30, the team will host the annual UMF Invitational, while the State of Maine (Oct. 14) and NAC (Oct. 28) Championships will dominate October.

“To be the most competitive this year we will stress team running and running in packs as much as possible. We lost our top runner from last year to graduation but our returning runners and incoming runners are top-quality athletes. If we run as team and pack as many UMF runners together near the top, we will be able to compete within the region again this year.”
