New Women's Cross Country Coach Announced

The University of Maine at Farmington announced today that Katie (Clark) Herbine has been named the head coach of the Beaver women’s cross country team. Herbine has spent the past two years as an attorney with the law firm of Johnson & McGowan based out of Naples, Florida. She becomes the fourth head coach in UMF women's cross country history.

Herbine has a long history of running, beginning with road races with her family that grew into varsity participation in track and field at Bangor High School (Bangor, ME). In college Katie turned her focus to basketball when she was offered a scholarship to play at the University of Maine. There she was a member of the team that made four NCAA national tournament appearances and was captain from 1999-2000. Since graduating from UMaine in 2000, Katie has resurrected her running career and has participated in several road raced, the 2003 Chicago Marathon, the 2005 Disney Marathon and is training to compete in the 2006 Disney Marathon.

A 2000 graduate from UMaine with a degree in history, and a 2003 graduate of the New England School of Law with a Juris Doctor degree, Herbine takes over a program that has a strong history of success. In the past seven years, the Beavers have won six conference titles, have made six national level appearances and had the conference runner of the year six times.

Katie recently purchased a farm in Starks, ME with her husband Andy and spends her free time working on the farmhouse or the land when she is not training.

Women's Cross Country Runs Well at UMass Dartmouth

Hurricane Ivan prevented super fast times in Saturday's Shriners Invitational at UMass Dartmouth, but UMF's Misty O'Brien ran a personal record by 48 seconds helping the Beavers to a 29th place finish.  Kendra Pouliot also ran well, just missing her goal time of 25 minutes by 18 seconds.  The Beavers defeated conference opponent Mount Ida College.  This race features some very experienced competition, so though UMF finished farther back than they liked, they gained valuable experience and will definitely improve in the future.

2004 Women's Cross Country Season Preview
This year the UMF women’s cross country team will be a full team again. After a rebuilding year, the UMF team is made up of  young, enthusiastic runners. The women harriers are still on the upswing of a year with low participation levels, but this season brings brighter hopes for the team’s chances to do well at the conference meet. Kate Dickinson, the returnee from 2003 will lead the team with her experience and quick feet. After training and succeeding in race walking she will make the transition back to running after a successful spring. Joy Clark (’08) and Andra Spearrin (’06) could be important factors; and anyone could be a surprise after a summer of base training. “ I believe if the team stays healthy and united we have a chance to challenge the other teams in our conference and maybe even fight for the conference title. The most exciting thing about this new team is that they all want to be here. It is a very motivated group of women,” says coach Jenna Richardson. Only time will tell what these athletes can do. As pre-season gets underway, you might see them around town, working hard to be the best they can be!
