Seven UMF Athletes Recognized as All
Americans
UMF is honored to have seven athletes on the NAIA All
American rosters from cross country and soccer. Kate McGuire, from the
cross country team, earned the distinction by placing 21st in the national
meet held on November 23rd. Megan Woodcock of the women's soccer team
was selected to the third team as a midfielder for her outstanding
performance leading the team to its first ever appearance in the national
championship tournament. Athletes making the honorable mention roster from
the women's soccer team are goalkeeper Alyson Pontbriand, and defenders Jodi
Dodge and Lindsay Tatarczuk. Todd Chamberlain and David Sithole from
the men's soccer team were also selected to the honorable mention
roster.

UMF XC Star Kate McGuire Races to 21st Place Finish at NAIA Nationals, 2 Men Finish in Top 200
Senior Kate McGuire, Sunrise Conference and NAIA Region 10 Runner of the Year, sprinted to an impressive 21st place finish at the NAIA Nationals on Nov. 23 in Kenosha Wisconsin. McGuire’s time of 19:07 in the 5-kilometer race is a personal best. Simon Fraser's Emilie Mondor won the race by nearly two minutes, setting a new NAIA meet record, finishing with the time of 16:43.
On the men’s side, UMF sophomore Nick Scott came across the line in 193rd place with a time of 28:30 on the 8k course. He was followed by senior Brett Almasi who was the 199th finisher to cross the line with a time of 28:40.

Cross Country Teams Take
2nd at Regional Meet
The UMF cross country teams experienced a day of highs and
lows yesterday as they each captured 2nd place in the regional meet held at
UMaine Presque Isle. The women's race was highlighted by Kate
McGuire's win which earned her a birth in the national meet. However,
the women's team was edged out of a win and a national birth by Lyndon
State's one point margin. On the men's side, the Beavers were again
edged out by Lyndon State but were exited to have four runners qualify for
nationals. They were Nick Scott, Brett Almasi, Doug Pierce and Andrew
Sweeney. Kate McGuire was named Region 10 Runner of the Year and
women's coach Kelley Cullenberg was named Region 10 Coach of the Year.
The Beavers will now prepare for the national meet which will be held in
Kenosha Wisconsin on November 23rd.

Women's Cross Country Wins 5th
Conference Title
The UMF women's cross country team captured its 5th
consecutive conference title today as they broke away from the pack with a
score of 28. UMF's Kate McGuire won the race in at time of 19:46, 21
seconds faster than she ran the course last Saturday earning her Runner of
the Year honors for the second year in a row. Rounding out UMF's top
finishers were Andra Spearrin (20:50), Holly Chapdelaine (21:59), Megan Roy
(22:38) and Maggie Atkins (23:53), Molly Harris (27:17) and Bonnie Blake
(33:40). For their top 7 overall finishes, McGuire, Spearrin,
Chapdelain and Roy make the All Conference Team. UMF will next be
competing in the NAIA Region 10 meet held on November 9th at UMaine Presque

Weather Ice Cold, Beaver XC Red Hot
Despite ice-cold temperatures, the Beavers were red-hot on Saturday, blasting out of the starting gate and never looking back as both XC teams went on to take the top spot in the UMF Invitational held at Mt. Blue High School.
On the women’s side, Kate McGuire was the frontrunner, coming in first place with a time of 20:07. Andrea Spearrin was close behind, taking second with a time of 21:48. Holly Chapdelaine was fifth, crossing the line at 22:03, Megan Roy followed in seventh (22:33) and Margaret Atkins rounded out scoring, coming through the corral in 12th (23:25). Other finishers for the Beavers included Molly Harris in 28th (27:25) and Bonnie Blake in 39th (32:11). UMF had a decisive win with 27 points, followed up by Nyack College with 66, UNE with 75, UMPI with 90, Maine Maritime with 118 and UM Machias with 122.
UMF will host the Sunrise Conference Championship meet next Sunday.

Women's Cross Country Wins Lyndon
State Race
UMF senior standout Kate McGuire ran a 20:59 on the Lyndon
State course yesterday to take first place in the race. Race
organizers tell UMF that a sub 21:00 time has only been run 4 time before on
the Lyndon course. As a team the Beavers placed all runners in the top
15. Freshman Andra Spearrin took 3rd with a time of 22:58 followed by
junior Holly Chapdelaine's 4th place 23:17, sophomore Megan Roy's 5th place
23:42, freshman Maggie Atkins' 10 place 25:36, sophomore Molly Harris' 13th
place 29:02 and freshman Bonnie Blake's 14th place 34:21. UMF will
spend this week gearing up for the UMF Invitational this weekend and then
for the Sunrise Conference Championship meet also here at UMF on the
26th.

Women's Cross Country Takes 5th at
State Meet
The UMF women's cross country team combined for at team
total of 163 points good enough for a 5th place finish behind Bowdoin
College, Bates College, Colby College and the University of Southern Maine
at the State of Maine Invitational. Individual times for the Beavers
were: Kate McGuire (21:23), Andra Spearrin (22:04), Holly Chapdelaine
(22:08), Megan Roy (22:37), Molly Harris (26:31), Michelle Camasso (28:22)
and Bonnie Blake (29:52). The Beavers return to the course on Saturday
when they travel to Lyndon State then they will prepare for the UMF
invitational on the 19th.

Women's Cross Country Ties for
First at Gordon
Senior Kate McGuire again led the Beavers with a second
place time of 19:37 as they tied Roger Williams for first place in the
annual Pop Crowell Invitational held at Gordon College Saturday. UMF's
other finishers were Andrea Spearrin (21:25), Holly Chapdelaine (21:31),
Megan Roy and Maggie Atkins with 22:03 each, Michelle Camasso (25:40), Molly
Harris (26:53), and Bonnie Blake (29:26). UMF will take the course
again on Saturday October 5th in the State of Maine Invitational held at
Twin Brooks.

Women's Cross Country Places 2nd in
UNE Invitational
The Beavers produced another strong performance Saturday as
they placed 2nd behind #10 ranked Bowdoin College. Senior Kate McGuire
led UMF with a race winning time of 20:30. Junior Holly Chapdelaine
placed 5th overall with a time of 22:16. Rounding out UMF other
finishers were freshman Andra Spearrin with at time of 22:49, sophomore
Megan Roy (23:23), freshman Maggie Atkins (23:52) and freshman Bonnie
Blake(28:47). The Beavers enjoy an off weekend then will travel to
Gordon College on September 28th for their next race.

Women's Cross Country Preview
After winning the MAC Championships for the past four years and taking the 2001 NAIA Region 10’s top
trophy, the Beavers have set some high goals. Among them are winning
the inaugural Sunrise Conference championship along with regionals and a
repeat trip to nationals. Already, the Beavers are gearing up for another highly competitive, record-breaking season with the return of 2001’s All-Conference runners senior captain Kate McGuire and junior Holly Chapdelaine. Also returning to the team will be proven veteran junior Megan Roy.
The team will get a fresh jolt of talent from a group of six rookies, including freshman Margaret Atkins, Bonnie Blake, Michelle
Camasso, Andrea Spearrin and Kristin Webster as well as new sophomore Molly Harris.
At the wheel for the Beavers will be one of Maine’s most respected running coaches, Kelley
Cullenberg who returns to coach the women's team for the second year.

and Women's Cross
Country Place 2nd and 3rd in Saint Michael's Invitational
The UMF men improved on last years 9th place finish to take
second place behind the strong performances from Andrew Sweeney, 6th overall
(29:12) and Nick Scott, 8th overall (29:15). The UMF women were again
led by senior captain Kate McGuire as she won her first race of the year
with a time of 20:06. Junior Holly Chapdelaine placed 8th overall and
second on the team with a time of 22:03. Both teams are pleased with
the results and are looking forward next weeks race at the University of New
England.
