Women's basketball falls at Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team returned from the holiday break tonight as the Beavers fell to Williams College 78-49 at the Williams Winter Classic.

Caitlyn Laflin (Farmingdale, ME) posted a double-double for the Beavers with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Farmington (3-5) is scheduled to take on Norwich University in the Williams Winter Classic consolation game Sunday at 1 p.m. Williams improved to 4-6 on the season and will face conference rival Bates in the tournament championship game Sunday at 3 p.m. Bates (8-1) knocked off Norwich 84-70 in an earlier tournament game.

Mika Peterman scored 23 points to lead Williams, while Jess Harris posted a double-double in the victory, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. After a scoreless first half, Chessie Jackson finished with nine points and 12 rebounds. Lisa Jaris netted nine points and 12 rebounds. The Ephs were dominant on the glass to a tune of a 67-51 advantage.

Following Laflin, Jillian Ross (Belfast, ME) netted 10 points for the Beavers with Erin Porter (Bangor, ME) adding nine points.

The Ephs moved the ball well in the first half, and also ran the floor well. Of their 17 field goals, nine were assisted, with Greenberg leading the way with five helpers. Williams only shot 37.8 percent from the floor (17 of 45), but due to Peterman's hot hand, hit 62.5 percent (5 of 8) of their three-point attempts.

Peterman went 4 of 5 from beyond the three-point stripe and finished the half with 18 points and four rebounds. Her three with 13:12 left gave the Ephs a 15-7 advantage and came in the middle of a 14-0 run which had the Ephs leading 21-7.

Harris came off the bench to score 10 points and secure seven rebounds in 13 minutes of action, while Greenberg netted seven points. Williams outrebounded UMF 34-20 in the half.

Laflin helped keep the Beavers in the game for awhile and finished the half with a team-high 10 points and three steals.
