Women's basketball falls to UNE
FARMINGTON -- University of New England outscored the University of Maine at Farmington 19-8 over the final seven minutes to collect a 63-52 non-conference women's basketball victory over the Beavers today at Dearborn Gymnasium.
The Beavers enter the holiday break at 3-4 with a trip to Williams College on Jan. 3-4 for the Williams Holiday Classic, while the Nor'easters improved to 6-3 with a game at Colby College on Jan. 3.
Alli Gamache (Dudley, MA) and Kelley Paradis (Newport, ME) each tallied 15 points for UNE. Margo Russell (Madison, ME) grabbed nine rebounds and made four blocks in the win, while Paradis made four of the Nor'easters' 15 steals.
Neither team shined offensively in the contest, but the Nor'easters outshot the Beavers 30.6 percent (19 of 62) to 25.4 percent (15 of 59) in earning the victory.
Caitlyn Laflin (Farmingdale, ME) scored 15 points and snagged nine rebounds for the Beavers with Ashley Busque (Belgrade, ME) supplying 12 points and Erin Porter (Bangor, ME) adding 11 points and 12 rebounds.
The Nor'easters opened the contest with a 14-4 stretch over the opening nine minutes, but Farmington was able to scratch back behind nine of Busque's points. The Beavers grabbed a 23-22 edge on a bank shot by Laflin with 1:25 left in the game, but a pair of free throws by Paradis gave UNE a 24-23 lead at intermission.
The Beavers bolted into the second half, scoring the first eight points of the frame for a 31-24 advantage with 15:11 left to play. UNE bounced back and regained the advantage on a Gamache three with 8:40 left in the game.
The game was knotted at 44 with 7:11 remaining in the contest when the Nor'easters scored the next nine points over a three-minute span for a 53-44 command. UNE closed out the game at the charity stripe (eight for eight effort) to seal the victory.
