Julie Davis
Director of Athletics, Fitness and Recreation
Julie
Davis was named the University of Maine at Farmington Director of Athletics, Fitness and Recreation in 2000.
Under her guidance, the department has enjoyed enhanced
student-athlete and community support in the area of facilities,
scheduling, sports medicine, sports information, strength and
conditioning and educational programming. In addition to her role
with varsity athletics, Davis also oversees the University's Health and Fitness
Center.
Relying on a
strong foundation of quality coaches, Davis oversees one of Maine’s
most successful athletic departments from both a competitive and
academic standpoint. Since 2003, Farmington
athletic teams have captured 17 North Atlantic Conference onference championships. Davis
also places a strong emphasis on equal success in the classroom and
that success has shone through in each of the last eight seasons as
Farmington has led its conference in the number of scholar-athletes awards
each year.
Davis has also focused
significant attention towards the well-rounded development of
student-athletes, promoting healthy living, leadership development
and community service through grant-supported programs that resulted
in the University being awarded three competitive and significant
grants from the NCAA. They include:
Choices -- an
initiative dedicated toward alcohol education and prevention
programming for student-athletes and the larger campus community.
PIR (Professional in Residence program) -- covered tuition,
room and board for a week of intensive training at the Betty Ford
Center.
SAMGI -- a strategic alliance matching grant that allowed the department
to add a full-time administrative and coaching position that will
coordinate the Choices and Champs Life Skills Programs.
Davis has skillfully guided the
department through a series of planned transitions that resulted in
full membership in the NCAA Division III North Atlantic Conference. In her
second year, she served as the president of the Maine Athletic
Conference and was selected as the conference's Athletics Director of
the Year. She played an instrumental role in founding the Sunrise
Conference and has since been an active member facilitating the
growth and development of the North Atlantic Conference. The NAC facilitates equitable and competitive scheduling for all Farmington varsity programs, while continuing competitive rivalries with high
quality NCAA Division III competition in the state of Maine.
Prior to Farmington, Davis amassed 20 years of successful experience
in intercollegiate athletics. Previously, she served as
administrator, faculty member, and coach at several Midwestern
institutions. Immediately prior to joining Farmington, she
was assistant manager of a comprehensive personal training
department at Life Time Fitness, Inc., in Columbus, Ohio, and a
management consultant specializing in small college athletics,
athletic/fitness facility design, risk management and gender equity.
Her experience includes eight
years at Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., where she was associate
athletics director and director of club, intramural, and
recreational sports. She played a major role in the development of
Carleton’s $15 million recreation and fitness center. In addition,
she has coached women’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, field
hockey, and softball at other institutions. She was the conference
and region men's and women's tennis coach of the year for the NIAC and NAIA District
IX and recognized for teaching excellence by her students and peers
while serving as faculty at Nebraska Wesleyan University.
Davis earned her Bachelor’s
degree in physical and elementary education from Bethany College in
West Virginia, where she graduated cum laude as a three-sport
varsity athlete. She obtained her Master’s degree in exercise
science from Marshall University, W.V., and completed the course work
and comprehensive exams toward a doctorate in athletic
administration at the University of Iowa. Julie is a NIRSA Certified
Recreation and Sport Specialist and was a member of the first NACWAA/HERS
Institute.
