Dick Meader

Men's Basketball/ Baseball Head Coach

A coach for 30 years, Dick Meader is in his 13th season at the helm of the University Maine at Farmington's basketball and baseball programs. Prior to this, he served seventeen years as the head basketball coach at Thomas College. 

A 1968 graduate of Farmington State College (now UMF), Meader played four years of basketball and baseball while earning a degree in secondary education. He went on to earn a master's degree from the University of Maine while serving as an assistant basketball coach.  He was later inducted into the UMF Athletics Hall of Fame for his playing and coaching achievements.  He has also seen several of his players continue move onto coaching careers of their own through the high school and college ranks in Maine.

Meader has also co-owned the Pine Tree Basketball Camp, Inc.,  held each summer on the Colby College campus. The summer of 2006 will mark the 33rd year of teaching basketball to boys throughout the state of Maine.

Meader has coached three All Americans, three Academic All Americans and has been named Basketball of Baseball Coach of the Year nine times by his peers. He is married to Betty-Jane Meader and they have two sons, Lance and Daren. Lance and Daren both played basketball for and graduated from UMF.

Assistant Coach Edwin Thompson

Edwin Thomason, a former Jay High School Graduate and All-State player and recent college graduate from Webber University, is entering his second season as an assistant coach at UMF. Thompson, who brings a strong background as a collegiate and professional player to his position, also played for Howard University and the University of Maryland. Then went on and played professional baseball with the Bangor Lumberjacks (Bangor, Maine).

Thompson hit over .300 during his four-year college career playing. During his senior year, he was a Florida Sun Coast Conference All-Star helping Webber to a season record for wins, an NAIA Regional appearance and its first Top 25 appearance, all while setting a school record for doubles.

Prior to joining the staff at Farmington, Thompson was a varsity assistant and hitting coach for Jay High School which won the Mountain Valley Conference Championship in 2004.  He helped Jay to a 16-5 record and oversaw a lineup that set new offensive records in hits, runs, doubles and on-base percentage. He also was the Jay Middle school J.V boy’s basketball Coach and an Assistant to the Jay High School girl’s basketball team that was 16-7 on the season.
