Softball notches split with Thomas College

FARMINGTON -- The University of Maine at Farmington softball team managed a North Atlantic Conference split with Thomas College as the Terriers took the opener 1-0, but the Beavers rebounded in the rainy nightcap with a 2-0 edge at Prescott Field today

The Beavers (9-8, 6-4) are scheduled to host the University of Maine at Presque Isle Thursday with a twinbill tabbed for a 1 p.m. first pitch. The Terriers (8-15-1, 6-4) are slated to host Castleton State College on Saturday at 3 p.m. Originally scheduled for Waterville, the games were moved to Farmington due to unplayable field conditions. Thomas remained the home team for the contests.

In the first game, Jennifer Higgins (Old Town, ME) singled home Ali Kriegel (Winslow, ME) in the fourth inning to lift the Terriers to the 1-0 win.

Higgins finished with a pair of base hits for the Terriers. Kriegel singled, went to second on a sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on a groundout to set the stage for Higgins' knock.

Jordan Kennedy (Detroit, ME) hurled the complete-game victory with six hits allowed, two walks and 13 strikeouts.

Jessica Timmreck (Brunswick, ME) recorded the loss with a complete-game effort of six hits allowed, a walk and two strikeouts. Timmreck tried to help her cause with three singles, while Shannon Mitchell (Portsmouth, NH) doubled.

In the second game, Mckell Barnes (Durham, ME) singled twice and drove in a run to help Farmington to a 2-0 win.

Barnes' RBI single gave the Beavers a 1-0 lead in the third inning and Casandra Dyer (Freeport, ME) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fifth to give Farmington an insurance run. Chelsea Cozzolino (Bryant Pond, ME) also singled twice in the win.

Liz Bergeron (Milford, ME) registered the win on the mound, tossing a five-hitter with five walks and five strikeouts.

Mallorie Blakney (Fairfield, ME) and Kristy Clements (Monroe, ME) each had a pair of base hits in the loss.

Patrice Cianchette (Corinna, ME) worked five innings for the Terriers to receive the loss. She had three strikeouts.
