Softball takes two at MMA
CASTINE -- The University of Maine at Farmington women's softball team swept a North Altantic Conference doubleheader today from Maine Maritime Academy 6-0, 12-3 at Ritchie Field.
The Beavers improved to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in the NAC. Farmington is scheduled to visit Colby on Wednesday. The Mariners fell to 2-11 (0-4).
In the opener, Farmington pitcher Liz Bergeron (Old Town, ME) only allowed one hit while Sam Morency (Lewiston, ME) collected five RBIs leading the Beavers to a 6-0 victory.
Bergeron struck out seven MMA hitters in the win for UMF. Kasey McPhail (Benton, ME) collected two hits and Shannon Mitchell (Portsmouth, NH) had the other RBI in the victory.
Maine Maritime's only hit came in the seventh inning when Megan Russell (Peru, ME) laid down a bunt single to break up the no-hitter. Mallery Stanley (Standish, ME) gave up nine hits and three walks, taking the loss for MMA.
In the second game, Farmington collected 15 hits including eight doubles on their way to the 12-3 victory. Jessica Timmreck (Brunswick, ME) picked up the win for the Beavers, going five innings and surrendering only four hits.
Farmington was led by McKell Barnes' (Durham, ME) 3-for-4 game with two runs scored and two RBIs while Mitchell went 3 for 3 with two runs and two RBIs. Barnes capped off her afternoon with a two-run home run in the fifth inning, giving Farmington the nine-run cushion.
