Softball sweeps Johnson State

JOHNSON, Vt. -- The University of Maine at Farmington women's softball team grabbed a pair of North Atlantic Conference victories over Johnson State College 4-3, 8-1 today at Minaert Field.

The Beavers upped their record to 5-6 overall and 4-2 in the NAC with a doubleheader at Lyndon State College scheduled for Sunday at noon. The Badgers slipped to 7-10 (2-4).

In the opener, Farmington took advantage of five Johnson State errors to notch a 4-3 victory.

Johnson scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning when CarolAnn Jackson (Enosburg Falls, VT) doubled home Morgan Rogerson (Hardwick, VT) and Brittany Lumsden (Hardwick, VT) to take the 3-2 lead.

Farmington responded in the top of the fifth with two runs to a take the lead right back keyed by a Kasey McPhail (Benton, ME) RBI single.  Liz Bergeron (Milford, ME) relieved starter Jessica Timmreck (Brunswick, ME) and struck out five in the final two innings to earn the save.

Johnson starter Allie Cunningham (Manchester, NH) pitched well in the loss striking out five, scattering six hits, and walking three in seven innings.  Ashley Allegrini (Cos Cob, CT) belted a home run in the third inning while Julie Gervais (Enosburg Falls, VT) and Rogerson each had two hits apiece including a double for Gervais.

Shortstop Samantha Morency (Lewiston, ME) went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored for Farmington.

In the second game, catcher McKell Barnes (Durham, ME) put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh inning when she belted a two-run home run over the left centerfield fence to make the score 6-1 Farmington.  The Beavers tacked on two more runs for good measure and cruise to a 8-1 win in the nightcap.

Bergeron allowed four hits over the first two innings but shut down the Johnson State (7-10, 2-4) bats there after not allowing a hit over the final five innings while striking out eight and walking three for the complete-game victory.

Barnes finished 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI to pace the Beaver offense while Casandra Dyer (Freeport, ME) when 2-for-4 with a triple, two RBI, two runs scored, and two stolen bases.

JSC starter Julie Gervais (Enosburg Falls, VT) was touched for 13 hits over seven innings in the loss.  She also had a first inning single and came around to score the Badgers lone run when catcher Brittany Lumsden (Hardwick, VT) tripled to right center field.
