Softball splits with Husson

FARMINGTON -- The University of Maine at Farmington softball team won 5-3 in the opener, but fell 5-2 in the nightcap in a non-conference doubleheader against North Atlantic Conference foe Husson University today at Prescott Field.

The Beavers (10-11) are scheduled to host Green Mountain College in a NAC twinbill on Saturday at 2 p.m. Husson (18-13) is slated to host Lyndon State College in NAC play Saturday at 1 p.m. Originally scheduled to be played in Bangor, the games were moved to Farmington after an earlier doubleheader was moved to Bangor due to unplayable field conditions. Husson remained the home team.

In the opener, Emily Coye (Naples, ME) and Kasey McPhail (Benton, ME) each drove in a run in the eighth inning to lift the Beavers to 5-3 extra-inning victory.

Coye plated pinch-runner Whitney Page (Sorrento, ME) with a grounder. After Coye moved along on another groundout, McPhail singled her home for the winning margin.

Mckell Barnes (Durham, ME) led the Beavers with a single, a double, a home run and two RBI. McPhail finished with a single and double, while Chelsea Cozzolino (Bryant Pond, ME) laced a pair of singles and drove in a run.

Liz Bergeron (Milford, ME) earned the victory, scattering eight hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

Dottie Cameron (South Plainfield, NJ) singled three times and doubled for the Eagles, while Brianna Webster (Belfast, ME) sent the contest into extra innings with an RBI base hit in the seventh to tie the game at 3-3.

Megan Richard (Wilton, ME) took the loss with two hits allowed and a strikeout in 1.2 innings of relief. Caitlin LeBorgne (Scarborough, ME) started and went 6.1 innings with nine hits allowed, a walk, a hit batter and three strikeouts.

In the nightcap, Webster and Cassie Berry (Newcastle, ME) each drove in two runs to lead Husson to the 5-2 victory.

Berry drove in a run on a squeeze bunt in the first and clubbed a solo home run in the fifth, while Webster plating a pair of runs on a single in the second.

Sarah Risser (Brewer, ME) singled, doubled and drove in a run in the win with Cameron and Rachel Volcechovski (Jefferson, NJ) collecting two singles apiece.

Nicole Sargent (Sullivan, ME) notched the victory, allowing eight hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

Barnes singled twice and knocked in a run for the Beavers with Cozzolino recording an RBI single. Shannon Mitchell (Portsmouth, NH) added a pair of base hits.

Whitney Page (Sorrento, ME) went the distance for Farmington with eight hits allowed, four walks and two strikeouts.
