Softball swept by Bowdoin

BRUNSWICK -- The University of Maine at Farmington softball team fell 6-0, 4-3 in a non-conference doubleheader against Bowdoin College today.

Farmington slipped to 1-5 with a visit to Maine Maritime Academy slated for Saturday. The Polar Bears upped their mark to 15-10.

In the opener, the Polar Bears scored five unearned runs on their way to the 6-0 victory.

Ali Coleman doubled twice for Bowdoin and drove in a run, while Caroline Dewar and Amy Hackett had two hits and two runs scored apiece.

Julia Jacobs dominated game one in the circle for the Polar Bears, holding the Beavers to just two hits while striking out nine in the shutout.

Emily Coye (Naples, ME) and Erin Porter (Bangor, ME) each singled in the loss.

Liz Bergeron (Milford, ME) scattered 11 hits with one strikeout and a hit batter for the Beavers.

In the second game, Mckell Barnes (Durham, ME) doubled and homered as Farmington attempted to rally for an early 4-0 hole, but the Polar Bears held on for the 4-3 win.

Hillary Smyth delivered the big blow for Bowdoin, crushing a three-run home run in the second inning to give the hosts a 4-0 lead.

Following Barnes, Coye, Casandra Dyer (Freeport, ME) and Kasey McPhail (Benton, ME) each singled with Coye and McPhail each plating a run.

Michelle Wells closed the door for Bowdoin, however, earning the save with 1.2 innings of relief, allowing just one hit. Courtney Colantuno got the win for the Polar Bears.

Jess Timmreck (Brunswick, ME) took the loss with three walks and four strikeouts in a complete game.
