Softball splits to open season

LEWISTON  -- The University of Maine at Farmington softball team opened its season by splitting a twinbill against Bates College with the Beavers bouncing back from a 10-0 loss in the first game to earn an 8-5 win in the second contest.

The Beavers (1-1) are scheduled to visit Bowdoin College for a doubleheader Monday. The first pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.

Emily Coye (Naples, ME) and Whitney Page (Sorrento, ME) each collected a pair of hits with a pair of RBI in the second game.

Farmington scored once in the first inning and added four more, all unearned, in the fourth off Bates starter Sarah Cullen (2-3), who allowed 10 hits in four innings of work. Bates relief pitcher Christina Knobel was charged with one run on four hits in three innings.

The Beavers totalled 14 hits in the game, all singles. Jessica Timmreck (Brunswick, ME), Erin Porter (Bangor, ME), Mckell Barnes (Durham, ME) and Casandra Dyer (Freeport, ME) each also had two hits apiece.

Timmreck (1-0) earned the win for the Beavers, going the distance and allowing five runs, four earned, on nine hits and four walks.

Saniuk went two of two at the plate for Bates, while Leah Citrin went two for four with a run and an RBI.

Bates pitcher Kristen Finn threw a no-hitter in the first game. Finn shut out the Beavers on no hits and two walks while striking out four to earn her second win in as many days, raising her record to 2-5.

The Bobcats, meanwhile, rapped out 10 run on 13 hits in four innings against Farmington starter Liz Bergeron (Milford, ME), shortening the game to five innings.

Bates senior Stacia Saniuk hit a two-run home run in the first inning, her second homer in as many days and her third this season. Saniuk owns the Bates career homers record, now with 20. Saniuk also hit an RBI groundout later in the game. Other offensive leaders for Bates included Lauren Dobish, who hit two doubles and scored twice, and Katherine Buckley, who went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Leah Maciejewski, Monica Berube and Jean McIntyre also collected two hits apiece.
