Softball falls, Lesley forces if-necessary game

BANGOR -- The University of Maine at Farmington softball team was hit with its first loss of the North Atlantic Conference Championship Round today as the Beavers fell 5-2 to Lesley University at Husson College.

The Beavers (24-8) will face Lesley (29-10) again Sunday at noon in Bangor for the NAC title. For the tournament schedule, visit www.nacathletics.com/sports/sball/championship/2008.

Farmington struck first scoring a run in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. The run came on a sacrifice fly by Kasey McPhail (Benton, ME) scoring Sarah Defilipp (Brewer, ME).

After a scoreless second inning, Lesley College scored two runs in the top of the third, taking a 2-1 lead.

In the top of the fifth, Lesley built on its lead, scoring three more runs, highlighted by a two-run home run from Georgia Saltzman (Lynn, MA). In the bottom of the inning, Farmington scored one run to cut the lead to 5-2, but Lesley shut out the Beavers the last two innings as the Lynx went on to win 5-2, forcing a final game for the NAC Title. McPhail plated the other Farmington run with a sacrifice fly, scoring Lauren Overlock (Belfast, ME).

Lesley was led by Saltzman who singled, homered and had two RBI. Fralick added two singles, a double, two runs and one RBI for Lesley.  Burnett picked up her second win of the day, throwing seven innings giving up two runs on five hits and four walks while striking out three.

Farmington was led by McPhail with two RBI. Defilipp, Overlock, Kelly McDonough (Windham, ME), Katelyn Ross (Belfast, ME) and Erin Porter (Bangor, ME) each singled in the loss.

Defilipp was hit for the loss as the junior was charged with five runs on 11 hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
