Defilipp, Overlock Earn First Team All-NAC Softball Honors
Sophomore
2B/P Sarah Defilipp (Brewer, ME) and senior outfielder Lauren
Overlock (Belfast, ME) were named to the 2007 North Atlantic
Conference (NAC) All-Conference First Team following their outstanding
performances during the 2007 campaign.
Defilipp was a two-way threat for the Beavers, hitting .353 and scoring
22 runs, good for second on the team. On the mound, Defilipp was 7-2
with a 3.05 ERA, winning her first six decisions. She allowed 54 hits
and nine walks in 59.0 innings, striking out 42.
Overlock, the Beavers’ leadoff hitter, batted a team-bets .436 and
scored a team-high 31 runs in 24 games. She also led the team in hits
(34), total bases (43), slugging percentage (.551) and on-base
percentage (.516).
UMF
finished at 15-9 overall and 9-1 in league play, advancing to the
semifinals of the NAC Tournament.

UMF
Bows Out of NAC Softball Tourney Following a Pair of Close Losses
The
UMF softball team was eliminated from the 2007 NAC Softball Tournament
following a 7-5 loss to Elms and a 3-1 loss to Lasell today in
second-day action. The Beavers finish their season with a record of
15-9.
In
the second round winners’ bracket game, Elms College turned a 2-1
deficit into a 6-2 lead with a five-run fourth inning and then held off
a UMF rally, which produced a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth
innings, for the 7-5 win. Megan Goodrow (Oakland, ME) had
another strong game for UMF, finishing 3-for-4 (double) with three RBI,
while Erin Porter (Bangor, ME) and Sarah Defilipp (Brewer, ME)
added a pair of hits.
In
the elimination game, Emily Slader fired a complete-game three-hitter to
lead the Lasell softball team to a 3-1 win over UMaine-Farmington. Her
UMF counterpart, Defilipp, pitched well enough to win on most days,
allowing seven hits and three runs in 6.0 innings, but the Beavers’
Kelly McDonough (Windham, ME) drove in the only run, while Lasell
scored twice in the third and once in the fifth to secure the victory,

UMF
Softball Beats Husson, 6-3, to Advance in NAC Tourney
Overlock
(Belfast, ME) continued her outstanding season with a 3-for-4,
three-run effort as the UMF softball team defeated Husson, 6-3, in
opening round play at the 2007 NAC Softball Championship today at
Lasell. Sarah Defilipp (Brewer, ME) picked up her seventh win of
the season with a complete-game effort, while Kelly McDonough
(Windham, ME) added a pair of hits.

UMF Softball Advances in NAC Playoffs in
9-8 Thriller
It
took two extra innings and a series of comebacks, but the UMF softball
team defeated Lesley, 9-8, in nine innings today to advance to the
semifinals of the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Softball
Championship. The Beavers rallied four different times during the game,
overcoming two, three-run deficits, until Holly Tripp (Ellsworth, ME)
delivered Kelly McDonough (Windham, ME) with the winning run in
the bottom of the ninth. UMF is now 14-7 overall.
Lesley scored in the top of the first, but UMF knotted the game in the
bottom half when Sarah Defilipp (Brewer, ME), who pitched all
nine innings to earn the win, singled and scored on an RBI single from
Megan Goodrow (Oakland, ME). Lesley added three more in the top
of the second, but Farmington answered with three in the bottom of the
third, highlighted by McDonough’s two-run single.
Trailing 5-4 and three outs away from opening-round elimination for the
second-straight season, Lauren Overlock (Belfast, ME) led off the
bottom of the seventh with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice and
scored on Goodrow’s two-out single. When Lesley went ahead, 8-5, in the
eight, the Beavers answered once again, plating three runs of their own
on RBI singles from Tripp and Megan McCrum (Bangor, ME) and an
RBI double from Alix Raymond (W. Hartford, CT). After holding
Lesley scoreless in the top of the ninth, McDonough reached on a
fielder’s choice (a failed squeeze play that erased the winning run at
home) and then scored when Tripp’s groundball was mishandled.
Defilipp (9IP, 10H, 4 ER) improved to 6-1 this season, while Goodrow led
the way offensively with a 3-for-4, three-RBI performance.

UMF Softball Ends Regular Season With
Losses at Elms
Elms’ Tammie Tremblay threw a complete-game in game one and the Blazers
capitalized on errors in the bottom of the seventh in each game to
complete a non-conference doubleheader sweep with 3-2 and 5-4 victories
over the University of Maine-Farmington on Sunday afternoon at Dooley
Field. With the sweep, Elms College concludes its regular season
14-11, while Maine-Farmington concludes its regular season 13-7.
Farmington jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game one with single runs in the
fourth and fifth innings. Kelly McDonough (Windham, ME) singled home
Erin Porter (Bangor, ME) in the fourth for the first run, while Lauren
Overlock (Belfast, ME) delivered a sacrifice fly to score an
inning later. Elms
knotted the score with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and, in the
bottom of the seventh, Jess LeDoux raced all the way around the bases on
a throwing error to lead off the frame. Sarah Defilipp (Brewer, ME)
suffered her first loss of the season, allowing two earned runs in 6.0
innings.
In
game two, Farmington built a 4-0 lead following a three-run fourth
inning in which Overlock delivered a two-run double after scoring the
game’s first run in the opening frame. Elms rallied with a single run
in the bottom of the fourth and three more in the sixth to tie the game
at 4-4 and, in the bottom of the seventh, a pair of UMF errors on the
same play allowed the winning run to score. Overlock and McDonough led
the Beaver offense with three hits apiece.

Porter,
McDonough Lead UMF Softball Past Becker
Erin Porter (Bangor, ME) banged out five hits and Kelly McDonough (Windham, ME)
drove in four runs to lead the UMF softball sweep to a doubleheader
sweep of Becker in NAC softball action this afternoon. Farmington won
the first, 6-3, and the second, 12-3, to improve to 13-5 overall and 9-1
in conference play.
In
the opener, UMF scored five times in the second inning, highlighted by a
two-run home run from Alix Raymond (W. Hartford, CT), and held
off Becker the remainder of the game. Sarah Defilipp (Brewer, ME)
and Megan Goodrow (Oakland, ME) added RBI singles in the inning,
while Defilipp picked up the victory with five innings of two-run
pitching. McDonough knocked in an insurance run in the sixth, driving
in Porter (double).
Game two lasted just five innings, as Farmington scored five in the
first and third innings to cruise to victory. A two-run double from
Holly Tripp (Ellsworth, ME), who finished the game with four RBI,
highlighted the first inning, while an RBI double by Renee Trafton
(Corinth, ME) was the big hit in the third. Meagan Carman
(Unity, ME) allowed seven hits and three runs during her victorious
pitching performance.

Saint Joe’s Sweeps UMF Softball
The
SJC softball team swept a doubleheader from Farmington today, beating
the Beaver 6-3 in game one and 5-3 in game two. The Monks banged out 25
hits between the two contests, while Farmington managed just nine in
dropping to 11-5 overall this season.
In
the opener, Farmington took a 3-1 lead through three innings, plating
three unearned runs. SJC, however, rallied for three runs in the sixth
and two more in the seventh to rally for the victory. Sarah Defilipp
(Brewer, ME), Alix Raymond (West Hartford, CT) and Breanna
Conners (Madison, ME) collected the UMF hits.
In
game two, St. Joe’s scored single runs in each of the first three
innings and, with a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth, held
off a late UMF rally for the 5-3 win. Farmington scored twice in the
fifth when Renee Trafton (Corinth, ME) and Conners reached base
to open the inning, with Emily Coye (Naples, ME) driving in the
first run with a single and Conners scoring on a wild pitch.
Three-straight singles and a passed ball accounted for the Beavers’
final run in the sixth.

Husson,
UMF Softball
Split in NAC Action
Erin Porter (Bangor, ME)
went 2-for-2 with five RBI, including a pair of two-run singles, and
Megan Goodrow (Oakland, ME) knocked in three runs to lead the UMF
softball team to a 10-4, game one victory and a doubleheader split with
Husson in NAC softball action today at Prescott Field in Farmington.
The Beavers dropped game two, 10-2, leaving them at 11-3 overall and 9-1
in conference play heading into the final weekend of the regular
season.
Sarah Defilipp (Brewer, ME)
pitched six innings in game one to remain perfect at 4-0, allowing four
runs on nine hits. The Beavers used a five-run second and a three-run
third to account for its advantage, with Porter delivering both of her
RBI singles in those frames. Lauren Overlock (Belfast, ME), who
led off the first with a double and scored on Porter’s sac fly, led off
the second with a single and finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs
scored and two RBI. She is now hitting .500 this season with a .589
on-base percentage.
In
the nightcap, Husson broke open a 3-2 game with two runs in the fourth
and three more in the sixth against UMF starter Meagan Carman (Unity,
ME). The Beavers stranded 10 runners in the game, and were led
offensively by Defilipp, who finished 3-for-4. Overlock was 2-for-4 as
well.

UMF Softball Sweeps Lyndon State
Kelly McDonough (Windham, ME)
and Lauren Overlock (Belfast, ME) collected two hits apiece to
back the five innings of shutout pitching from Sarah Defilipp
(Brewer, ME) as the UMF softball team defeated Lyndon State, 11-0,
in game one on its way to a doubleheader sweep this afternoon in the
home opener at Prescott Field. UMF won the second, 4-2, to improve to
10-2 this season.
A
five-run first was triggered by a leadoff single from Overlock and a
one-out double from Erin Porter (Bangor, ME), while Megan
McCrum (Bangor, ME) and Overlock delivered RBI singles later in the
inning. The Beavers added a pair of unearned runs in the second and two
more in the third, highlighted by RBI singles from Holly Tripp
(Ellsworth, ME) and Alix Raymond (W. Hartford, CT).
In
the second game, Farmington started strong once again, scoring three in
the first inning on its way to victory. Overlock led off with a walk
and scored on Defilipp’s ensuing double. After a single from Porter,
Megan Goodrow (Oakland, ME) cleared the bases with a two-run
double. Farmington’s final run came across in the fifth, when Tripp
doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly. Liz Bergeron (Milford, ME)
picked up the win with seven innings of three-hit, two-run pitching.

Overlock Earns Conference Honor
Senior
outfielder Lauren Overlock (Belfast, ME) was named the North
Atlantic Conference (NAC) Softball Player of the Week, for the week
ending Sunday, April 22.
Overlock, UMF's leadoff hitter, performed that role extremely well in
Farmington's 8-0 week. She hit a team-best .538 (14-for-26) with a pair
of doubles, four RBI and a team-best 13 runs scored. She also added
seven walks for a .636 on-base percentage and was a perfect 3-for-3 in
stolen base attempts. Overlock hit safely in all eight games, with
multiple hits in five, and reached base at least twice in all eight
contests.
UMF Softball Swept by Bowdoin
The
UMF softball team’s season-opening eight-game winning streak came to an
end today, as the Beavers lost to Bowdoin, 8-2 and 3-1, in
non-conference action in Brunswick. UMF is now 8-2 overall.
In
the first game, Bowdoin scored five times through the first three
innings, and held Farmington scoreless into the sixth, when UMF rallied
for a pair of runs. Erin Porter (Bangor, ME) and Kelly
McDonough (Windham, ME) wrapped singles around the inning’s first
out and then scored on a single from Holly Tripp (Ellsworth, ME)
and an infield out. Tripp led Farmington with a 2-for-3 effort, while
Meagan Carman (Unity, ME) was tagged with the loss, allowing 14
hits and eight runs in six innings of work.
Bowdoin scored twice in the second inning against UMF starter Liz
Bergeron (Milford, ME) and the Beavers cut the lead to 2-1 in the
sixth, when Lauren Overlock (Belfast, ME) reached on an infield
error, moved to third on a Porter single and scored on an groundout from
Megan Goodrow (Oakland, ME). Farmington put a pair of runners on
in the seventh, but could not score. Bergeron suffered the loss, while
Carman allowed just one unearned run in three relief innings.

Farmington Softball Keeps Rolling with
Wheelock Sweep
The
UMF softball team kept its perfect record intact with a doubleheader
sweep of Wheelock today in NAC softball action. The Beavers won the
opener, 8-0, and the second game, 11-1, to improve to 8-0 this season.
Strong pitching, which allowed for just four hits between the two games,
and timely hitting, which produced 27 hits, headlined the day.
In
the opener, Liz Bergeron (Milford, ME) fired a complete-game
(five innings) two-hitter with nine strikeouts, while Sarah Defilipp
(Brewer, ME) went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and Lauren
Overlock (Belfast, ME) and Holly Tripp (Ellsworth, ME) added
two hits apiece in the winning effort. Farmington scored twice in the
first and third innings and put the game away with three more in the
fourth, when Overlock and Defilipp led off the frame with a double and
single.
In
game two, Farmington scored three times in the first, highlighted by RBI
singles from Erin Porter (Bangor, ME), Kelly McDonough
(Windham, ME) and Renee Trafton (Corinth, ME). After scoring
single runs in the second and third, Farmington sealed the win with a
six-run seventh, using a pair of bases-loaded walks and RBI singles from
Bergeron and Kate Ross (Belfast, ME). Defilipp picked up the
win, pitching the first three innings (2 H, 1 R) and Bergeron finished
the contest with four shutout innings, running her string to nine
shutout frames in the doubleheader.

UMF Pitching Stifles Thomas Twice in
NAC Softball Action
For
the third time in as many days, the UMF softball team swept a
doubleheader, this time besting NAC-foe Thomas, 2-0 and 5-1, to improve
to 6-0 this season. The Beavers utilized strong pitching efforts from
Sarah Defilipp (Brewer, ME) and Meagan Carman (Unity, ME),
as the duo allowed just one run and nine hits over 14 innings this
afternoon in Waterville.
In
the opener, Defilipp fired a complete-game three-hitter with four
strikeouts and helped her own caused by singling and scoring in the
first for the only run support necessary. An unearned run in the
fourth, on a Megan Goodrow (Oakland, ME) single and an error,
provided the cushion.
In
the second game, Farmington broke a scoreless tie with a run in the
sixth, when Defilipp singled, moved to third on a pair of groundouts and
scored on a wild pitch. The Beavers broke the game open with four runs
in the seventh, highlighted by a one-out, two-run double from Goodrow.

UMF Softball Sweeps Mt. Ida to Improve
to 4-0
The
UMF softball team (4-0, 4-0) posted its second-straight doubleheader
sweep in as many days, besting Mt. Ida, 12-3 and 10-2, this afternoon in
NAC softball action in Newton, MA. The Beavers closed out the opener
with a six-run sixth inning, highlighted by a two-run triple from
Holly Tripp (Ellsworth, ME) and had a pair of four-run innings in
the nightcap, with Caitlin Flaherty (Pembroke, ME) delivering a
two-run triple in the sixth and final inning.
The
Beavers collected 12 hits in the opener, with two apiece from Lauren
Overlock (Belfast, ME), Megan Goodrow (Oakland, ME), Kelly
McDonough (Windham, ME) and Alix Raymond (W. Hartford, ME).
In the second game, UMF banged out eight hits and took advantage of
seven walks. Overlock was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored as the
lone repeat hitter.
Liz Bergeron (Milford, ME)
picked up the win in game one, allowing six hits and three runs over six
innings of work. Meagan Carman (Unity, ME) was the winner in
game two, allowing just one earned run in six innings with no walks and

UMF Sweeps MMA To Open 2007 Softball
Season
The UMF softball team endured a month-long delay to the start of its
softball season, but when opening day did arrive, the Beavers responded
with a doubleheader sweep of Maine Maritime in Castine. UMF won the
opener, 4-2, and then captured the nightcap, 15-4.
In
the first game, UMF did all its scoring in the first two innings,
pushing across a pair of runs in both the first and second frames.
Lauren Overlock (Belfast, ME) led off with a walk and Sarah
Defilipp (Brewer, ME) followed with a single to put runners on first
and second. Erin Porter (Bangor, ME) then drilled a pitch to
left field, which was misplayed, allowing Overlock to score and Defilipp
to advance to third, before scoring on a wild pitch. In the second,
Holly Tripp (Ellsworth, ME) led off with a single and scored on
another outfield error, while Alix Raymond (W. Hartford, CT)
singled home the fourth and final run.
Defilipp (1-0) earned the victory with six strong innings, allowing just
one earned run through six innings. Liz Bergeron (Milford, ME)
pitched a scoreless seventh to earn a save.
In
the second game, MMA jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of unearned
runs in the first, but the Beavers scored six times in the six in the
second, four in the third and five in the fourth to pull away. The game
was called after five innings.
During the six-run second, UMF sent 12 hitters to the plate and scored
six times, highlighted by an RBI triple from Tripp and run-scoring
singles from Defilipp, Megan McCrum (Bangor, ME) and Breanna
Conners (Madison, ME). In the third, Porter’s two-run double and an
RBI double by Renee Trafton (Corinth, ME) pushed the lead to
10-3.
Meagan Carman (Unity,
ME) allowed
just two hits and four unearned runs in the game two win, while the
offense banged out 17 hits. Defilipp and Megan Goodrow (Oakland, ME)
had three apiece.

Weather Affects Baseball, Softball
Schedules
The UMF baseball and softball teams will adjust their schedules
following this week’s storm. The baseball team’s games at Saint
Joseph’s has been postponed to Wednesday April 18 at 3:00 while Monday’s
game at Bowdoin has been rescheduled once again, to April 20 at 3pm.
The UMF softball team will play a single game vs. Lesley (noon) and a
single game vs. Wheelock (2pm) on Saturday at
Buckingham Browne & Nichols. The remaining games for the weekend
have been cancelled.
Baseball, Softball Game Changes
Announced
The
UMF baseball and softball games at Bowdoin College have been adjusted.
The baseball game scheduled for Wednesday, April 4 has been postponed
due to poor field conditions. The teams will attempt to play their
twice-postponed contest on Monday, April 9 at 4:00 p.m. In addition,
the Polar Bears softball team will now host the scheduled contest
against UMaine-Farmington on April 11 at 3:30 pm.

Softball Opener at UNE Cancelled
Saturday’s softball season opener at the University of New England has
been cancelled due to unplayable field conditions stemming from last
weekend’s storm. It is unlikely that a reschedule date will be
established.
