The UMF softball team earned the North Atlantic Conference
championship on Sunday with a pair of victories over #1 seed Elms
College. The Beavers will advance to the double elimination NCAA
national tournament for the first team in program history as the NAC's
first ever representative in the tournament.
UMaine-Farmington sophomore pitcher Stephanie Moriarty (Sandwich, MA)
earned a pair of victories and was named Tournament Most Valuable
Player to help lead the No. 4 Beavers to a pair of upset victories
over No. 1 Elms College in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC)
Softball Tournament Championship on Sunday afternoon at Leary Field.
UMaine-Farmington won the first game 2-1 and then posted a 9-8 win in
the deciding game to earn the NAC's first-ever automatic qualifier to
the upcoming NCAA Division III Tournament.
Elms College, which was trying to earn its second NCAA Division III
Tournament berth in the last three years, finished 26-9 overall.

double to deep left center field to tie the game at 5-5.

2005 UMaine Farmington Softball Season Outlook
The 2005 UMF softball team is looking forward to the season opener on
April 1st. There is optimism for a very competitive season with more depth
and experience at every position. Twelve new players will be joining ten
returners to round out what is expected to be one of the most competitive
softball squads UMF has fielded.
PITCHING
Junior Lauren Stacey (West Baldwin, ME) and sophomore Stephanie Moriarty
(Sandwich, MA) should be solid leaders for the pitching staff. Moriarty is
coming off a 9-5 freshman year and Stacey has two health knees for the
first time in three years. Freshman Meagen Carmen (Unity, ME) will see
some action throughout the season to give the staff three very solid
pitchers.
INFIELD
The infield will feature senior first baseman Cindy Ravinski (Norton, MA)
is looking to have a strong year as one of UMF’s leading hitters and RBI
specialists. Second base has several freshmen battling for a starting
position: Megan Goodrow (Oakland, ME) looks to be the leading candidate
with Kelly McDonough (Windham, ME) and Michelle Derouche (Skowhegan, ME)
looking for playing time as well. Sara Martin (Strong, ME) should give UMF
a solid shortstop with Megan Goodrow backing up when needed. Junior Mary
Berry (Norridgewock, ME) will continue to play third after making the
transition from first and will be a solid hitter as well. Freshmen Emily
Davis (Cumberland, ME) can fill in when needed. Holly Tripp (Ellsworth,
ME), the Beavers’ leading hitter as a freshman with at .675 slugging
percentage, should provide solid leadership behind the plate with Jen
Brouillette (Sandwich, MA) a solid back up when not playing in the
outfield. Junior Ashley Symington (Dennis, MA) will add experience at the
catching position.
OUTFIELD
Junior Kristi Cochin (Springvale, ME) should provide the outfield with
solid leadership in center. She will be surrounded by a core of new
players fighting for playing time. First year players Emily Davis, Renee
Trafton (Corinth, ME), Brandi Rideout (Mattawamkeag, ME) and Megan McCrum
(Bangor, ME) will be battling for starting positions in the outfield.
This year the Beavers hope to win the one run games that will give them
the chance to be a top team in the North Atlantic Conference and make a
run at a conference title and NCAA appearance.
