University of Maine at Farmington Athletics Event Music Policy
All music to be played publicly for athletic events representing University of Maine at Farmington (home or hosted off-site) must represent the University of Maine at Farmington.
Athletics program in a positive fashion and adhere to the policies and values of good sportsmanship/anti-violence and non-discrimination (gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, veteran status.)
Appropriate message: positive values, strength, determination, commitment, rise to the challenge and good spirited fun/celebration is welcome.
Inappropriate message: in your face taunting, call to violence, partying w/banned substances (tobacco/alcohol promotion), overt sexual objectification/disrespect of any gender. (If it would be inappropriate for one team/gender, then it is inappropriate for all teams.)
Language: no obscenities/swear words (clean versions need to be squeaky clean and checked. A version full of swear words that just has them all bleeped out is not ok. One or two bleeped out will fly (it should not be in a repeated chorus.)
Music type: Mixed variety is a good idea. Most people can tolerate one song of something they don't like. Short versions are usually better. Instrumentals are useful options. Note: screaming and/or long electric guitar rifts send the older crowd (staff included) out of the venue.
Work/spectator environment needs to be moderated. The music played over the PA represents much more than the team. The target audience includes: a diverse group of workers and spectators (students, recruits, faculty, staff, parents, community members, local legislators, potential donors and any of their children).
Approval process: Music needs to be presented to AD at least 72 hours before desired event. The best method to share with the AD is to e-mail the tracks in I-tune format, and e-mail the play list with song names, artists, version AND lyrics. (A CD w/printed or e-mailed lyrics is also acceptable.) Be sure the lyrics sent match version provided. Coaches should be included in the process/at minimum preview (read and listen to) the music prior to AD review.
The goal is to provide an element of good natured fun, entertainment, pride and motivation for a community of stakeholders (athletes, fans and staff) through our standards and selections.
