Cross country teams place fifth at States
NEW GLOUCESTER -- The University of Maine at Farmington men's and women's cross country teams each ran to a fifth-place finish at their respective races at the State of Maine Championships at Pineland Farms on Saturday.
Bowdoin won the men's 8,000-meter competition with 30 points followed by Southern Maine (43), Bates College (71), Colby College (98), UMF (170), University of New England (179), St. Joseph's (189), Maine Maritime Academy (231) and University of Maine at Presque Isle (252).
Tim Millett (Gorham, ME) and Kel Cenga (Brewster, MA) led the Beavers by placing 30th and 31st, respectively. Millett finished with a time of 27:59 with Cenga right behind at 28:00. Peter Delano (Rockport, ME) at 42nd, Chris Durkin (Brunswick, ME) at 57th and John Zwetsloot (Wells, ME) at 72nd completed the scoring.
Millett and Cenga completed ahead of UNE's Matt Veiga (28:01). Earlier in the season, Veiga had beaten both by three minutes at the UNE Invitational as the Nor'Easters defeated the Beavers by 54 points. In today's race, UMF held off UNE by a point.
The Beavers are scheduled to co-host and compete at the North Atlantic Conference Championships. The championships are for Oct. 27 at Mt. Blue High School.
