Placed third at the UMaine Farmington Invitational over the weekend
with a time of 28:37, preventing visiting Bowdoin from receiving a
perfect score.

All Conference Teams Announced, 23 UMF Student-Athletes Honored
UMF has placed 23 student-athletes on the North Atlantic Conference
All Conference Team rosters. They are as follows:

Men's Cross Country All Conference Members
The UMF men's cross country team was well represented on the North
Atlantic Conference All Conference team announced on Saturday after
the conference title race. UMF harriers took five of the seven
all conference slots. Joe Fitzsimmons, Nick Scott, Drew Croteau
and Andrew Sweeney were all placed on the NAC all conference team as a
result of finishing in the top seven in the conference race. Ben
Fletcher, the races top finisher, was named Runner of the Year and
placed on the all conference team as well. UMF Coach Arvid
Cullenberg was named conference Coach of the Year for the third time
in four years.

Men's Cross Country NAC Champions
The UMF men's cross country team captured back to back North Atlantic
Conference championships on Saturday. UMF dominated the field
placing runners in the first four slots. Ben Fletcher won the 8k
race with a time of 28:02, closely followed by teammate Joe
Fitzsimmons with a 28:09. Senior captain Nick Scott followed in
third with a 28:34 and Drew Croteau came in fourth with a 28:45.
Rounding out UMF roster were Andrew Sweeney (7th, 29:40), Tharjaith
Rout (10th, 30:29), Philip Jackson (11th, 30:34), Jon Chin (12th,
31:09) and Josh Plourde (35th, 48:23). UMF will prepare for the
New England Regional race which will be held at Twin Brook
Recreational Area on Saturday November 13th.

Fletcher Makes ALL-State
Team, Leads Harriers To Best Finish Ever At State Of Maine Meet
Ben Fletcher of Auburn became the first Farmington runner in their
seven year XC history to make the all-state team by placing seventh
overall while leading the Beavers to a fourth place team finish.
Fletcher ran most of the 8 kilometer race in 7th place but slipped to
11th at the four mile mark. With a half mile left he started to turn
it up and slowly reeled in four runners in front of him earning a spot
on the all-state team finishing in a time of 27:55. Captain Nick Scott
and Joe Fitsimmons had strong performances and placed 18th and 19th in
times of 28:23 and 28:30 respectively. Rounding out the top five were
Andrew Sweeney placing 30th in 29:07 and Drew Croteau 32nd in 29:12.
Other finishers were Tharjaith Ruot 45th in 30:13, Phil Jackson 52nd
in 30:32, Jon Chin 64th in 31:36. For the previous four seasons the
team finished in 5th place. This was the first time UMF (96 Points)
has finished ahead of Southern Maine (108)

Men’s Cross Country Wins St Josephs’
Invitational
Joe Fitzsimmons captured his first cross country win and led the
Beavers to a victory at St Joe’s today. Fitzsimmons ran 28:59 and
edged out teammate Ben Fletcher at the finish line. Drew Croteau
placed 4th in 29:16 on the rugged trail alongside Sebago Lake. All
three ran as a pack through the first three and a half miles while
slowly reeling in the race leader Jeff Sprague of Presque Isle.
Sprague finished 3rd with a time of 29:06. Freshmen John Chin and Phil
Jackson placed 4th and 5th respectively for the team (13th and
15th overall) and Josh Plourde finished 6th for the team. The Harriers
are looking forward to the return of Nick Scott, Andrew Sweeney and
Gatdet Ruot at the State meet next weekend at Twin Brooks Course in
Cumberland. Start time for the race is 4:00 pm.

Men's Cross Country Takes 2nd at UMF
Invitational
The UMF men's cross country team, led by junior Ben Fletcher's 3rd
place finish, took 2nd behind a powerful Bowdoin team in today's UMF
Invitational. Fletcher paced the Beavers with a time of 28:37
followed by Joe Fitzsimmons with a time of 29:16 in 7th place.
Other UMF finishers were Drew Croteau (10th, 29:37), Philip Jackson
(19th, 31:03), Jon Chin (33rd, 32:47) and Josh Plourde (69th, 53:43).

Men's Cross Country Places 4th at MIT
UMF's Ben Fletcher ran a 27:07 8K on Saturday to pace the Beavers to a
fourth place finish out of 12 teams at the MIT Harrier Invitational in
Boston. Other finishers for UMF were Joe Fitzsimmons (28:00),
Tarjiath Ruot (29:16), Drew Croteau (29:19), Jon Chin (30:04), Philip
Jackson (30:47) and Josh Plourde (53:33). UMF will return to the
course this weekend when they host the annual UMF Invitational at
Mount Blue High School at 11:45am.

Men's Cross Country Gaining Respect
North Dartmouth, MA: For the past five seasons the UMF Men’s Cross
Country team has been gaining depth and speed while quietly climbing
the ladder of respect. On a muddy course in torrential rain six of the
seven varsity harriers set personal records (PRs) and the team placed
13th out of 29 scoring teams. Bates College won the meet followed by
Brown University and MIT. The Beavers were led by Sr. Captain Nick
Scott (Monmouth, ME) who placed 64th out of 233 runners. Scott ran the
8 kilometer (4.96 miles) course in 27:13 and was just 17 seconds off
the UMF record (26:56) that he set last season. Moving up in the speed
department and setting PRs were Jr. Drew Croteau (Durham, CT) and Sr.
Andrew Sweeney (Wells, ME) who turned in the 3rd and 4th fastest
individual performances in the 7 year history of Farmington’s Cross
Country team. Croteau finished 81st with a time of 27:29 while Sweeney
was 82nd two seconds behind. Rounding out the top five (scoring
individuals) were JR Joe Fitzsimmons (Lewiston, ME) 112th in 28:14 and
FR Gatdet Ruot (Portland, ME) 139th in 28:51. Also turning in PRs were
FR Phil Jackson (Westbrook, ME) 30:19 an FR John Chin (Derry, NH)
31:39. JR Josh Plourde (Winslow, ME) had a strong performance and was
first for the team in the JV race.

Men's Cross Country Wins Castleton Invitational
The UMF men's cross country team continued its strong winning
tradition last weekend when they placed first in the opening race of
the season at Castleton State. The Beavers were led by Andrew
Sweeney, running in his first race after taking a year off to recover
from injury. Sweeney ran a 28:42 8K to take first place overall.
UMF placed seven runners in the top 10 to secure the victory.
Next up for the harriers will be the UMass Dartmouth Invitational on
Saturday the 18th at 12pm.

2004 Men's Cross Country Season Preview
The men's cross country team looks to build upon last years'
successful season. With four out of the top five Harriers returning
and the addition of four strong athletes this team should make a run
to repeat as North Atlantic Conference Champions. The team will be led
by Senior Captain and 2003 NAC runner of the year, Nick Scott of
Monmouth, ME. Also returning for the Beavers will be Junior Ben
Fletcher (Auburn, ME), Juniors Joe Fitzsimmons (Lewiston, ME), and
Drew Croteau (Durham, CT) who were selected to the 2003 All Conference
team. Rounding out the top returners is Josh Plourde, (Junior,
Winslow, ME). Fletcher took top honors for the team last season by
placing 58th of over 240 runners at the New England regional meet.
Rejoining the team will be former Sunrise and Maine Athletic
Conference All star Andrew Sweeney who sat out last season while
recovering from an ankle injury. Three solid first year runners will
add depth to this experienced team. The rookies will be led by former
Portland (ME) High standout Tharjiath (Gatdet) Ruot. Phil Jackson
(Westbrook, ME) and Jon Chin (Derry, NH) should add strength to this
talented group. |
