UMF XC Star Kate McGuire Races to 21st Place Finish at NAIA Nationals, 2 Men Finish in Top 200
Senior Kate McGuire, Sunrise Conference and NAIA Region 10 Runner of the Year, sprinted to an impressive 21st place finish at the NAIA Nationals on Nov. 23 in Kenosha Wisconsin. McGuire’s time of 19:07 in the 5-kilometer race is a personal best. Simon Fraser's Emilie Mondor won the race by nearly two minutes, setting a new NAIA meet record, finishing with the time of 16:43.
On the men’s side, UMF sophomore Nick Scott came across the line in 193rd place with a time of 28:30 on the 8k course. He was followed by senior Brett Almasi who was the 199th finisher to cross the line with a time of 28:40.

Cross Country Teams Take
2nd at Regional Meet
The UMF cross country teams experienced a day of highs and
lows yesterday as they each captured 2nd place in the regional meet held
at UMaine Presque Isle. The women's race was highlighted by
Kate McGuire's win which earned her a birth in the national meet.
However, the women's team was edged out of a win and a national birth by
Lyndon State's one point margin. On the men's side, the Beavers were
again edged out by Lyndon State but were exited to have four runners
qualify for nationals. They were Nick Scott, Brett Almasi, Doug
Pierce and Andrew Sweeney. Kate McGuire was named Region 10 Runner
of the Year and women's coach Kelley Cullenberg was named Region 10 Coach
of the Year. The Beavers will now prepare for the national meet
which will be held in Kenosha Wisconsin on November 23rd.

Men's Cross Country Takes Second
Place
The UMF men's cross country team had one of its best races
to date finishing 4 points behind conference champion Lyndon State.
UMF's pack ran well placing 4 runners in the top 8 slots. Sophomore
Doug Pierce was the Beaver's top finisher taking 4th overall with a time
of 29:15. UMF's other point scorers were Brett Almasi (29:39), Nick
Scott (29:40), Andrew Sweeney (29:41), Ty Thurlow (29:54), Tenney Noyes
(30:53), Luc Roy (31:04). Other finishers for the Beavers were Joe
Fitzsimmons (31:51), John Zuetsloot (32:57) and Tristan Swanson
(33:50). For their top 7 finishes Pierce, Almasi, and Scott make the
All Conference Team. UMF will next be competing in the NAIA Region
10 meet held on November 9th at UMaine Presque Isle. For complete

Weather Ice Cold, Beavers XC Red Hot
Despite ice-cold temperatures, the Beavers were red-hot on Saturday, blasting out of the starting gate and never looking back as both XC teams went on to take the top spot in the UMF Invitational held at Mt. Blue High School.
On the men’s side, UMF’s Doug Pierce led the Beavers chalking up a second place finish (29:12). Hot on his heels was the Beaver pack, led by Andrew Sweeney (29:29) with fourth, Nick Scott (29:33) with fifth and Brett Almasi (29:36) with sixth. Rounding out scoring was Luc Roy (31:03) with a nice 12th place finish. Other strong performances for UMF came from Joe Fitzsimmons in 18th (32:21), John Zuetsloot in 22nd (33:01) and Tristan Swanson in 23rd (33:03). The Beavers clearly took the top spot with a score of 28, followed by UMPI with 63, St. Joe’s with 67, UNE with 103, Nyack College with 105 and Maine Maritime with 138.
UMF will host the Sunrise Conference Championship meet next Sunday.

Men's Cross Country Takes 2nd at
Lyndon State
The UMF men also ran strong yesterday as they took second
place behind host Lyndon State. Lyndon State is ranked 22nd in the country
by the NAIA. Sophomore Nick Scott was UMF's top runner with at time
of 29:55, 30 seconds behind the winner. Other finishers for the
Beavers were Doug Pierce (30:02), Andrew Sweeney (30:49), Ty Thurlow
(31:38), Luc Roy (32:04), John Zwetsloot (33:38), Tenney Noyes (33:48) and
Tristan Swanson (34:19). UMF will spend this week gearing up for the
UMF Invitational this weekend and then for the Sunrise Conference
Championship meet also here at UMF on the 26th.

Men's Cross Country Places 5th at
States
The UMF men's cross country team came up with a 5th place
finish at Saturday's State of Maine Invitational hosted by Bates
College. The Beavers compiled a team score of 143. Individual
finishers for the Beavers were: Nick Scott (29:16), Brett Almasi
(29:24), Doug Pierce (29:51), Andrew Sweeney (30:00), Ty Thurlow (31:06),
Luc Roy (31:49), Joe Fitzsimmons (32:18) and John Zwebloot (33:26).
The Beavers return to the course on Saturday when they travel to Lyndon
State then they will prepare for the UMF invitational on the 19th.

Men's Cross Country Places 3rd at
Gordon
The UMF men had another very strong performance Saturday
as they placed 4 runners in the top 15 led by sophomore Nick Scott's 8th
place time of 28:27. Other finishers for the Beavers were Brett
Almasi (28:37), Doug Pierce (29:00), Andrew Sweeney (29:04), Tenney Noyes
(30:26), Luc Roy (30:43), Joe Fitzsimmons (30:57) and Tristan Swanson
(32:25). UMF will take the course again on Saturday October 5th in
the State of Maine Invitational held at Twin Brooks.

Men's Cross Country Takes Second
Place at UNE
Like the women's team the men showed off their form in a
second place finish behind #12 ranked Bowdoin College. UMF's tight
pack of 8 runners all finished within 4 minutes of each other with the top 5
finishing in a span of about 2 minutes. Sophomore Nick Scott led the
Beavers with at 5th place time of 27:14 followed by senior Andrew Sweeney
(8th, 27:24), Brett Almasi (9th, 27:39), freshman Ty Thurlow (14th, 28:03),
sophomore Doug Pierce (15th, 28:18), freshman Joe Fitzsimmons (24th, 29:22),
Luc Roy (29th, 30:14) and sophomore Tristan Swanson (31st, 30:48). The
Beavers enjoy an off weekend then will travel to Gordon College on September
28th for their next race.

Men's Cross Country Preview
After a winning season in 2001, the MAC champion Men’s Cross Country Team is back on the course and ready to quickly run to the top. After sending Brett Almasi, the first male runner in the program’s history, to the Nationals last year, things are looking good for the Beavers who hope to win the Sunrise Conference in 2002.
Leading the team will be seniors All-Region Team runner Almasi and All-Conference runner Sam
DeLand, junior All-Conference standout Andrew Sweeney and sophomore
co-captain and All-Conference star Nick Scott.
The team will also find depth in proven runners juniors Tenney Noyes and
co-captain Luc Roy, and sophomores Doug Pierce, Paul Parmley and Aaron
Witham. Rookies to watch include freshman Joseph Fitzsimmons of Lewiston, freshman Ty Turlow of
Lee and sophomore Tristan Swanson of York.
Coaching the team again this year will be Arvid Cullenberg, MAC’s 2000 and 2001 Coach of the Year.

Women's
Cross Country Place 2nd and 3rd in
Saint Michael's Invitational
The UMF men improved on last years 9th place finish to
take second place behind the strong performances from Andrew Sweeney, 6th
overall (29:12) and Nick Scott, 8th overall (29:15). The UMF women
were again led by senior captain Kate McGuire as she won her first race of
the year with a time of 20:06. Junior Holly Chapdelaine placed 8th
overall and second on the team with a time of 22:03. Both teams are
pleased with the results and are looking forward next weeks race at the
University of New England.
