Men's basketball slides by Johnson State

All five starters reached double-figures in points as the University of Maine at Farmington men's basketball team closed out its regular season with a 67-63 win over Johnson State College in North Atlantic Conference action today at Carter Gym.

The Beavers (12-11 overall, 10-4 in the NAC) are seeded third in the NAC and are scheduled to host No. 6 Maine Maritime Academy (9-16, 5-9) in the quarterfinals Tuesday. The game is scheduled to be held at 6 p.m. The Badgers slipped to 12-13 (6-8). Tournament seedings

Andrew Dean (Gorham, ME) paced Farmington with 17 points, while Eric Lelansky (Portland, ME) provided 15 points, Ted Neil (Strong, ME) 11 points and Josh Tanguay (Gorham, ME) and Eric Taylor (Oakland, ME) 10 points each. Dean and Lelansky each connected on three 3-pointers and Taylor completed a double-double with 11 boards.

Bobby Shedd led the Badgers with 31 points.

The Beavers held throughout the majority of the second half with the lead ballooning to 52-41 on a Lelansky three with 6:40 left in the game. Farmington held a 61-53 advantage with 1:27 to play, but the Badgers bounced back on a Leandro Martinez 3-pointer and a pair of Shedd free throws to cut the lead to 61-58 with 37 seconds. Dean drained six free throw attempts down the stretch to help Farmington close out the 67-63 win.
