Men's basketball holds on for win
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The University of Maine at Farmington men's basketball team bolted out to a 17-point halftime lead and staved off a late rally to down Wheelock College 68-60 today in North Atlantic Conference action.
The Beavers ran their record to 10-11 (6-4 in the NAC), while the Wildcats slipped to 1-21 (0-11).
A day after scoring his 1,000th career point, Matt St. John (Wayne, ME) posted 25 points for Farmington, including seven 3-pointers. Sean Fry (Jay, ME) chipped in 15 points in the victory.
Sherard Robbins led Wheelock with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Jarred Lynch threw in 13 points.
The Beavers hit 51 percent of their shots (16 of 31) in the opening half in building a 43-26 advantage. The Wildcats battled back with a Robbins jumper with 4:55 remaining in the contest cutting the deficit to 59-56. From there, the Beavers went on a 9-0 run over the next two-and-a-half minutes behind two treys from St. John and a trifecta from Andrew Dean (Gorham, ME) to push the lead to 68-56 and put the game away.
Farmington is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday at Dearborn Gymnasium against Bates College. The game is tabbed for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
