Men's basketball falls in final

FARMINGTON -- Trinity (Conn.) College defeated University of Maine at Farmington men's basketball team 61-38 in the final of the Hight Chevrolet Men's Basketball Tournament on Saturday at Dearborn Gymnasium.

Trinity's Patrick Hasiuk was named the Tournament MVP. Hasiuk was joined by teammate Robert Taylor, Farmington's Sean Fry (Jay, ME), Farmington's Ted Neil (Strong, ME), Southern Maine's Drew Coppenrath and University of Maine at Presque Isle's Dwayne Mitchell on the All-Tournament Team.

In the championship game, Russ Martin scored 18 points and Hasiuk tallied 17 points, including five 3-pointers, while the Beavers were held to 26.8 percent shooting (15 of 56).

Trinity improved to 2-0 with the victory. Farmington slipped to 1-1. The Beavers are scheduled to host St. Joseph's on Monday at 7 p.m.

The Bantams carried a 29-20 lead into intermission behind Hasiuk's hot hand (12 points, four treys). Robert Taylor chipped in with nine points and 10 rebounds with Aaron Westbrooks registering a team-high 11 boards.

Fry led the Beavers with 12 points and seven rebounds.

In the consolation game, USM broke open a tight game early with an 18-2 run and rolled to a 113-48 victory over UMaine-Presque.

The Huskies improved to 1-1, while the Owls slipped to 0-2.

Clinging to a 14-13 lead, USM took off to a 31-15 advantage on the aforementioned run and increased the lead to 57-23 at intermission.

Coppenrath led five Huskies in double figures with 20 points. Josh Daniels and Greg Whitaker each dumped in 11 points with Broderic Jones and Troy Jellison scoring 10 points each off the bench. USM shot 59.1 percent (39-66) from the floor during the contest.

Mitchell led all scorers for UMPI with 23 points.
