Men's basketball holds off Thomas for NAC win
FARMINGTON -- The University of Maine at Farmington men's basketball team outscored Thomas College 18-8 over the game's final six minutes in taking a 64-52 victory in North Atlantic Conference action on Wednesday night in Dearborn Gym.
The Beavers upped their mark to 3-1 with the win, while the Terriers evened their record at 2-2.
Matt St. John (Wayne, ME) led the way for the Beavers with a game-high 16 points, including a pair of 3-pointers down the stretch to take the win, while Josh Tanguay (Gorham, ME) added 13 points and nine rebounds in the paint.
A see-saw affair throughout the first half and into the second stanza, Farmington took the lead for the good on a Tanguay layup with 12:21 left in the contest to make it 39-37. The Beavers pushed the advantage to nine points, but Thomas persisted with a Darrell Alexander (Fairfield, TX) basket with 6:34 remaining cutting the lead to 46-44.
Farmington went on a 7-0 run – finished by a St. John 3-pointer – to increase the command to 53-44 with 3:52 left to play. The Beavers went seven of 10 from the foul line down the stretch to seal the win.
Sean Fry (Jay, ME) chipped in eight points and 11 rebounds for the Beavers, but missed nearly the entire second half after picking up his third and fourth fouls just after intermission. Eric Lelansky (Portland, ME) hit three 3-pointers for nine points.
Andrew Duncanson (Portland, ME) paced the Terriers with 15 points and six steals. Alexander finished with 12 points and Isaiah Brathwaite (Farmington, ME) chipped in 10 points.
The Beavers are scheduled to compete in the Colby College Tournament on Saturday and Sunday. Due to court renovations at Colby, the tournament is being held at UMF's Dearborn Gym. Games on Saturday feature Colby and Elms at 2 p.m. and Farmington and Fisher at 4 p.m.
