11/18/04
The UM-Farmington men’s basketball team opens the season Friday night
with their annual Hight Tournament. As always, this tournament is
comprised of top teams in the NCAA. UMaine Presque Isle comes back
again, along with Southern Maine representing the Little East. From
Florida, Palm Beach Atlantic University will travel north to look to
improve on their 24 win season of a year ago.
In 2004 the Beavers will face the most difficult non-conference
schedule of any New England Division III team. Division I teams,
Davidson (Nov.24) and Maine (Dec.30) highlight the schedule. Also
annual games versus Bates, Bowdoin and Colby always make for
competitive situations. Beside these games, the Beavers will also face
Plymouth State who made it to the second round of the NCAA tournament
in 2003. UMF will welcome back former assistant Jon Hayes and his U.of
New England team on Dec.11 and play St.Joseph College home and away
this year.
The North Atlantic Conference is new, but tough. Lasell, Castleton
State, Husson along with the Beavers will be the top contenders for
the championship and a berth in the NCAA tournament.
UMF returns a veteran team to face the challenge with three seniors
leading the way. Bobby Deetjen (Boothbay Harbor, ME) is a 1000 point
scorer and conference honorable mention player. Steve Ginn (Windham,
ME) is arguably the top perimeter defender in the conference and has
an opportunity to score 1000 points in his career. Luke Nielsen (Parsonsfield,
ME) UMF’s current blocked shots record holder, also returns. The most
underrated, and arguably the conference’s best inside defender and
rebounder, Nielsen looks to add double figure scoring to his resume.
Junior Travis Magnusson (Thomaston, ME), a second team conference
performer and our top scorer, looks to continue his offensive
production. Trafton Teague (Fairfield, ME) rounds out the starting
five. Teague provides solid play on the offensive and defensive end
every night. Travis Carrier (Auburn, ME) has made substantial gains in
his play and will play a critical role on the team. Juniors Mike Susi
(Pittsfield, ME), Lon Drillen (Brewer, ME) and Jeff McIver (Plymouth,
NH) have the experience necessary to step in when needed.
Sophomores Tyler Tracy (Sangerville, ME) and Mike Milliken
(Farmington, ME) will provide depth for the team.
The freshman class has an opportunity to make a substantial
contribution. SeanFry (Jay, ME), Isaac Hutchinson (Oakland, ME) and
Matt St.John (Wayne, ME) bring some skills that will be needed through
out the season. Tyler Hunt (Augusta, ME) and Matt Nichols (Portland,
ME) also add to that depth.
The schedule is difficult, but this team is very good defensively. If
they can stay away from injury, shoot the ball consistently and play
well at home, this team will make a run at the conference
championship.
