Men's Basketball Preview
The 2002-2003 UMF Men’s Basketball Team is admittedly young, but they play with
a talented eagerness that will make them one of the toughest teams to beat in the Sunrise Conference. They finished the 2001-2002 season in 3rd place in the conference with a winning 7-5 record, but fell to UMaine-Machias in a close 65-68 battle in the conference quarterfinals. Overall, they finished they season 11-14. “It was a very good season and we were very pleased,” said assistant coach Jon Hayes.
But last year is behind the team, and they are looking ahead to this season only. With no seniors and only three juniors, the keys for victory this year will be experience. Five freshmen will have to quickly learn the fast-paced, shot clock driven ways of college hoops, and six sophomores will need to step up and take strong leadership roles.
“ How the team does this year depends on our learning curve.” said
Hayes.
How the team plays on the road will also be important. Last year, their home record was an impressive 7-3, but while traveling, they fell back to 3-9. If they can improve on that record, it will be a major help. Tactically, the team will work at defensive rebounding, playing with leads, setting screens, getting open and upping the pace. Hayes said that the beauty of the team is that they are unselfish. There are no flashy leading scorers, instead, the team works together, with a lot of passing inside the arc. “They enjoy each other, and they enjoy the game,” Hayes said. “They play like they are playing in the backyard- it’s special. It’s a fun team to cheer for, because they play like the neighborhood kids.”
Sophomore captains Jon Bird and Bobby Deetjen will front the team.
Deetjen, who comes in at 6’4” leads the team in scoring and last year averaged 14.3 points per game and 7.3 rebounds earning him the conference Rookie of the Year nod in 2001-2002. Fellow sophomores Mike Ward (6’4”) also was a high scorer, averaging 12.8 points per game and Luke Nielsen is a key defender, who last year led the conference in blocked shots. Sophomore point guard Steve
Ginn, is small for the conference, but sets the pace on the court as an aggressive and agile player. New recruits include Travis Magnusson who was a finalist for Mr. Maine Basketball last year and Thad Broughton who was an impressive 2000-point scorer in high school. Other vital players include Dan Orcutt who is coming off an injury and James
Malley.
Because the team has a lot of raw talent, once they get the experience they need, they should be hard to beat. A crucial part of the first few weeks of competition will be reworking the order to see what positions match up with what players. Nevertheless, their goal this year is to be Sunrise Conference Champions. “They have good work ethic and we are really pleased with their talent, really pleased,” said head coach Dick Meader. “They are great young men and it’s going to be a challenge, but we’ve got a shot at it.”
