Basketball Players Receive Honors

Three UMF basketball players have garnered post season recognition for their performances this season:

  • Rachel Bard, senior captain of the women's team, was named a NAIA Division II Women's Basketball All-American Scholar Athlete. 

  •  Bob Deetjen, a freshman on the men's basketball team, was named Rookie of the Year by the Maine College Basketball Coaches and Writers Association.  

  • Kate LaHaye, a freshman on the women's team was, selected to the All Rookie Team for the State of Maine.

Men's Basketball Closes Out Season With Tough Loss

UMF led most of the game, but was unable to hold off an second half comeback from host UMaine Machias.  UMF was led by the play of senior captain Mike Wilcox who contributed 16 points and 6 assists.  Freshman Bob Deetjen and sophomore Mike Ward added 11 points each.  Deetjen grabbed a team high 7 rebounds in the losing effort.  UMF closes the season with an 11-14 record.

Deetjen Named MAC Rookie of the Week Again

UMF freshman Bob Deetjen was named MAC Rookie of the Week for the second week in a row.  Deetjen averaged 18.5 points per game and 7.3 rebounds per game in a 1-1 week.

Men's Basketball Defeats UMPI, 69-52

UMF was led by freshman duo Bob Deetjen and Steve Ginn who tallied 27 and 20 points respectively.  UMF closes the regular season with an 11-13 overall record and 7-5 in the MAC.  The Beavers will travel to UMaine Machias on Tuesday February 19th for a 7pm game.  A win will propel them into the MAC final four tournament held at the Augusta Civic Center on Sunday February 24th and Monday February 25th.

Men's Basketball Loses to UMaine Fort Kent, 62-76

UMF was led by freshman Luke Nielsen's 16 points and 10 rebounds, but was unable to get past UMFK for the win.  Other scorers for UMF were Bob Deetjen with 14 points, 10 rebounds, Mike Ward with 11 points and Mike Wilcox with 10 points.  UMF faces UMPI tomorrow in the last regular season game.

Men's Basketball Loses to Bowdoin, 57-64

Freshman Bob Deetjen had another strong performance leading the Beavers with 15 points and 6 rebounds.  Senior Mike Wilcox added 13 points, 6 assists and 2 steals in the loss.  Sophomore James Malley led all rebounders with 8.  UMF will close out the regular season on the road this weekend when they take on UMaine Fort Kent on Friday and UMaine Presque Isle on Saturday.

Deetjen Named MAC Rookie of the Week for the Fourth Time

Deetjen, a freshman forward from Boothbay, ME averaged 17.5 points and 8.5 RPG in 1-1 week.  Bob was also on the Player of the Week Honor Roll.

Men's Basketball Drops Close One to Machias, 74-78

UMF was led by freshman Bob Deetjen's 16 points followed by senior Tom Nadeau with 14, sophomore James Malley with 12 and freshman Steve Ginn with 11.  UMF's record drops to 10-11 overall and 6-4 in the conference.  Next up UMF will be at Bowdoin College on Tuesday the 12th at 7:30pm.

Men's Basketball Wins 5th in a Row Defeating Colby College

UMF was again led by freshman Bob Deetjen who tossed in 19 points and grabbed a team high 9 rebounds in a win over  Colby College 74-71 in Waterville last night.  Freshman guard Steve Ginn came off the bench to score 16 points and handed out 4 assists.  UMF's record improves to 10-10 overall and 6-3 in the conference.  The Beavers will face conference number 2 UMaine Machias on Saturday in Machias at 4pm.  With only three conference games remaining  UMF looks to finish strong and host a first round playoff game on February 19th.

Mike Wilcox, Mike Ward Named MAC Player and Rookie of the Week

Senior Mike Wilcox from Bangor was named Player of the Week by the Maine Athletic Conference for his performances last week.  In a 3-0 week Wilcox averaged 10 points per game and 3 steals per game.  Sophomore Mike Ward from South Portland was named Rookie of the Week averaging 13.5 points per game.

Men's Basketball Defeats UMaine Fort Kent, 77-75

UMF received a well balanced performance as it captured its 6th conference win of the season.  Freshman Bob Deetjen led the Beavers with 19 points and 6 assists followed by sophomores Mike Ward with 18 points and James Malley with 10 points and 10 rebounds.  Senior Tom Nadeau contributed 9 points on 3-3 shooting from three point range and freshman Luke Nielsen grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked 4 shots.  UMF improves to 9-10 overall and 6-3 in the MAC.  The Beavers will travel to Colby College on Wednesday for a 7pm game in Waterville.

Men's Basketball Eases Past UMaine Presque Isle, 73-58

UMF had four players score in double figures as they earned their fifth conference win of the season.  Senior Mike Ward led all scorers with 18 points followed by sophomore Mike Ward with 16, and freshmen Steve Ginn's 14 including 3 three's and Luke Nielsen's 11 points.  Freshman Bob Deetjen was UMF leading rebounder grabbing 9 boards.

Men's Basketball Defeats Thomas, 89-45

UMF opened the game very strong and enjoyed a 43-13 half-time margin in its way to its seventh win of the season.  Sophomore Nathanael Haynie led all scorers with 31, shooting 10-11 from three point range.  Sophomores James Malley and Jon Bird chipped in 12 and 13 points respectively.  Malley led all rebounders with 7.  Haynie's performance set a new UMF record for three pointers made in a game with 10 and is the 2nd best three point shooting performance in NCAA Division III so far this year.  The old record of 8 was set earlier this year by current UMF senior Tom Nadeau.  The Beavers will host back to back games this weekend when they take on UMaine Presque Isle on Saturday at 3pm and UMaine Fort Kent on Sunday at 2pm.

Deetjen Receives Three Honors

Freshman Bob Deetjen was named Rookie of the Week by the Maine College Basketball Coaches and Writers Association and the Maine Athletic Conference, as well as Player of the Week by the MAC, today for his performances last week.  Deetjen led the Beavers to an 80-76 win over Lyndon State and ended with a career high 36 points and 17 rebounds in the victory.

Men's Basketball Defeats Lyndon State, 80-76

Freshman Bob Deetjen's 36 points and 17 rebounds powered UMF past visiting Lyndon State.  Senior Mike Wilcox added 10 points, 7 assists, 3 steals and freshman Luke Nielsen grabbed 10 rebounds in the win.  The Beavers improve to 6-10 overall and remain 3-3 in the conference.  UMF is gearing up for 3 conference games next week, facing Thomas College on Wednesday the 30th and UMaine Presque Isle and UMaine Fort Kent on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Men's Basketball Falls to Husson, 84-71

Senior Tom Nadeau scored 28 points, his second highest scoring output of the season, but it was not enough to lift the Beavers past number one ranked Husson College.  Sophomore Mike Ward chipped in with 17 points and classmate Jon Bird grabbed a team high 6 rebounds.  UMF's record drops to 5-10 overall and 3-3 in the MAC.  The Beavers return to action on Saturday January 26 when they host Lyndon State College at 4pm.

Bob Deetjen Named Rookie of the Week

UMF freshman Bob Deetjen was named Rookie of the Week by the Maine Athletic Conference and the Maine College Basketball Coaches and Writers Association.  Deetjen averaged 14.6 points per game in a 2-1 week including 29 points and 11 rebounds in a win over St. Joseph's College on 1/19/02.

Men's Basketball Defeats St. Joseph's, 73-66

UMF hit 19 free throws in the second half on its way to dropping conference rival St. Joseph's College.  Freshman Bob Deetjen led the Beavers with 29 points followed by senior Tom Nadeau with 12, sophomore Mike Ward with 11 and freshman Steve Ginn with 10.  UMF improves to 5-9 on the season and 3-2 in the MAC.  The Beavers  return to conference play on Tuesday January 22 when they travel to number one ranked Husson College.

Men's Basketball Defeated By Maine Maritime Academy

UMF was unable to hold on to a 2 point half time lead as they were defeated by host Maine Maritime Academy 52-68.  The Beavers were led by senior guard Tom Nadeau who scored 17 points (4 three pointers), followed by sophomore Mike Ward and freshman Steve Ginn who added 10 points each.  UMF returns to action on Saturday January 19th when they face MAC rival St. Joseph's College at 3pm.

Men's Basketball Topples UMaine Machias, 77-75

UMF was led by sophomore Mike Ward's team high 21 points in its defeat of  conference number two UMaine Machias.  Other scorers for the Beavers were Senior Tom Nadeau with 16 points, sophomore James Malley with 14, and freshman Steve Ginn with 11.  UMF was able to seal the win by going 18-23 from the line.  The Beavers return to action on Wednesday January 16th  when they travel to Maine Maritime Academy for a 7pm game.

Men's Basketball Drops Two in Pennsylvania

The UMF men's basketball team traveled to Kings College in Wilkes-Barre, PA to take on two very talented teams in nationally ranked Elizabethtown (16) and regionally ranked Kings College (7).  On Saturday UMF freshman Bob Deetjen continued his strong play of the first semester scoring a team high 14 points, followed by senior Tom Nadeau with 11 points.  Freshman Like Neilson grabbed 8 rebounds for the Beavers in the 53-85 loss to Elizabethtown.  On Sunday UMF could not get past host Kings College losing 47-74.  Sophomore James Malley led the Beavers with 14 points.  Deetjen chipped in with 12 points and 11 rebounds.  UMF returns to conference play on Monday January 14th when they host UMaine Machias at 4pm.

Men's Basketball Drops Close One to UNE, 76-79 Ginn Named Rookie of the Week

UMF recorded its fifth single digit loss of the season last night as they fell to host University of New England.  UMF was led by sophomore Mike Ward who scored 25 points and senior Tom Nadeau who added 16 points.  UMF's record falls to 3-6 overall and 1-2 in the MAC.  The Beavers will return to action January 5th when they travel to Pennsylvania to participate in the Kings College Tournament.  On a positive note, freshman Steve Ginn was selected as Rookie of the Week by the Maine College Basketball Coaches and Writers Association.  Ginn is averaging 12.5 points per game and 5.5 rebounds per game.  UMF players have been selected as rookies of the week for each of the first three weeks of the season.

Nadeau Sets New Career Mark for 3 Point FG's in 57-51 Loss

For the second time in the last two games, UMF as held a halftime lead only to see a veteran opponent come away with a late victory.  Saturday versus a 6-3 Bates squad loaded with experienced upperclassmen, UMF defended well and scored a number of easy shots to gain a 31-20 halftime advantage.  In the second half, Bates stepped up their level of play, winning a tough road game at Dearborn Gym 57-31.  UMF continued their struggles from the charity stripe, connecting on only 14-24 free throws for the game.  Bobby Deetjen led UMF scoring 18 points and grabbing 7 rebounds.  Tom Nadeau and Steve Ginn scored 8and 7 points respectively.  Freshman Luke Nielsen started his first college game grabbing 6 boards to go with 4 blocked shots.  On a positive note, Senior Tom Nadeau surpassed Dan Legage into first place on the career list at UMF for 3-point field goals.  Nadeau now stands alone at the top with 172 and counting.  Legage had held the record of 169 since his graduation in 1995.UMF will play the final game of the semester Monday in Biddeford, versus the University of New England at 7:30.  UNE will be looking to avenge a loss to UMF earlier in the season.

Men's Basketball Comes Up Short Against Husson, 70-76

The Beavers (3-3) played a great game, but fell to a savvy Husson (4-3) squad in the last minutes, 76-70.  UMF came out shooting the ball well and defending Husson's strong inside out game.  After changing leads over the first 10 minutes, UMF pulled ahead behind the hot shooting of freshmen Steve Ginn and Mike Ward.  At halftime, the Beavers held a 6-point lead at 39-33.  The Beavers had  a chance to tie the game with seconds left on the clock, on a long lay-up attempt by Steve Ginn.  Ginn's shot rolled off the front of the rim to seal the win for Husson.  UMF was led by freshmen Steve Ginn (18 points, 6 rebounds) and Mike Ward (17 points).  Tom Nadeau added 15 points, while freshmen Bobby Deetjen and Luke Nielsen combined for 23 rebounds.  UMF will face Bates College at home on Saturday at 3:00.  UMF will end the semester with a trip to Biddeford where they will face UNE on December 10.

Men's Basketball Cruises Past Anna Maria College, 91-69

On Sunday afternoon, Maine-Farmington came out with some great shooting and defense to build a 20 point lead in the first 6 minutes versus Anna Maria College of Paxton, Mass. The solid play of Senior guards Tom Nadeau (20 points) and Mike Wilcox (6 points, 8 assists) led the Beavers to victory.  Several rookies made significant contributions.  Mike Ward had his best shooting night of the season going 7 of 12 from the floor (including 4 threes), while swiping 3 steals.  Steve Ginn went 5-7 on his way to back to back 15 point efforts.  Luke Nielsen grabbed 15 rebounds and Bob Deetjen chipped in with 14 points.  Tom Nadeau was named to the All-Tournament Team. Nadeau averaged 27 points, shooting 12-24 from 3-point range, and 8-9 from the charity stripe.  UMF will face Husson College this Wednesday night at Farmington.  Tip-off is set for 7:30, following the women's game.  Saturday will bring a talented Bates team to Dearborn for a 3:00 game.

Nadeau Scores 34 in Loss to Notre Dame College

Senior captain Tom Nadeau drained 8 three pointers on his way to a game high 34 points as the Beavers dropped a close one to Notre Dame College, 91-93.  Freshman Steve Ginn added 15 points and 3 assists, senior Mike Wilcox netted 13 points, 3 steals and sophomore Mike Ward chipped in 12 points, 7 rebounds and 2 steals.  UMF will play today at 12pm to close out the tournament and will return action Wednesday December 5th when they host MAC rival Husson College at 7pm.

Men's Basketball Player Bob Deetjen Receives Honor

Freshman Bob Deetjen was named Rookie of the Week by the Maine College Basketball Coaches and Writers Association today.  Bob was 19-35 from the floor and  3-7 from three point range in his first three college games and is averaging 15.8 points per game and 6.5 rebounds per game.  He also leads the team in rebounds and field goal percentage.

Men's Basketball Cruises Past Thomas College, 102-56

Senior guard Tom Nadeau led all scorers with 21 points followed by freshman Bob Deetjen with 17 points and sophomore Mike Ward with 13 points and 6 assists.  Freshman Luke Nielsen came off the bench to chip in 11 points, 14 rebounds and 5 blocks in the win.  UMF evens its record to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference.  The Beavers will play in the Johnson State tournament this weekend, facing Notre Dame College at 7pm on Saturday, with the second game of the tournament to be announced, on Sunday.  The Beavers return to conference action next Wednesday as they host Husson College at 7:30pm.

Men's Basketball Drops Conference Opener to St. Joe's

UMF was unable to overcome a sixteen point halftime deficit in a in last night's loss to St. Joseph's College, 59-63.  The Beavers clawed their way back into the game in the second half and took  the lead midway through the period but were unable to hold off  St. Joe's.  Sophomore Mike Ward led UMF with 11 pts and freshman Bob Deetjen added 10.

Men’s Hoops Plays Annual Alumni Game

A great turnout of alumni and some skilled basketball action headlined the annual men’s basketball alumni game on Saturday afternoon. Over three halves, it was the present day team edging the alumni by a score of 109-106.  Fourteen UMF Alumni suited up and showed the old skills and timing of the past. There were several surprise returns including Brian Regan (‘98) who flew in that morning from Los Angeles and Hall of Fame member Hank St. Pierre (‘74). Other Alumni who played were; Bill Brooks (‘93), Robbie Morin (‘95), Shawn Spadea (‘99), Troy Norton (‘96), Lance Meader (‘97), Chris Bessey (‘93), Daren Meader (‘00), Brent Barker (‘00), Mike Nelson (‘89), Jared Rivers (‘00), Steve Toland (‘99), Jesse Smith (‘95), and Mike Fullerton (‘01).  On the court, the Beavers were led by senior guard Tom Nadeau who scored 22 points (including six three pointers). Mike Ward and Bob Deetjen, playing for the first time in Farmington uniforms, scored 21 and 17 points respectively. For the Alumni squad, Jared Rivers slashed his way to 20 points, while Robbie Morin and Troy Norton chipped in with 16 and 13 points apiece.  The UMF men have two scrimmages before the start of the season. On Saturday the 10th the men will travel to Southern Maine for a 5:00 start. Tuesday November 13th the Beavers will host one the best teams in Maine, "Class Acts" out of Portland at 7:30. The season will open at UMF with the Hight Tournament on November 16th and 17th. Teams featured in this tournament include Maine-Farmington, Maine-Maritime, UNE, and Wesleyan.
