Club Sports

Club sports are essentially student led sports organizations that compete primarily against other colleges and universities.  The unique characteristic that distinguishes club sports from other clubs is this competitive aspect.  Club sports are sanctioned by the UMF student senate.  Student leaders (officers, captains and presidents) handle the administrative responsibilities for their respective teams.  In many cases, students have the challenging opportunity to coach their own club sport.  Some clubs benefit from the input of volunteer coaches.  Club sport coaches roles are defined by the students in coordination with the director of athletics.  A club sport coach's primary role is to teach skills and technique in a safe and progressive manner and to likewise teach strategy.  Each club sport also has a faculty advisor to assist them in overseeing budget and travel administration.  The director of athletics works closely with club sport officers to develop the coaching/leadership skills of the participants and coordinate practice/event management and athletic training coverage.

While many club sports have strong traditions, the offerings vary due to the changing interest, skill and commitment of the student participants.  Currently, most of the UMF club sports are highly organized and also operate under the rules and regulations of their own sports national, regional and local governing bodies. There is opportunity, however, for less structured club sports to emerge.  So if you don't see the sport you are looking for -- consider starting a new club.

Club sport schedules change readily due to the nature of their organization.  None the less, they play a vital role in the campus community.  Many club sports have loyal fans -- friends and family, students and faculty/staff.  Schedules will be published when available, but the best way to know if the game or match is on is to ask a player.

Current Club Sports Include:

Cheerleading -- Fall, Winter, and Spring Seasons -- Open
Competitive Skiing -- (Both Nordic and Alpine)-- Fall, Winter, Spring -- Open  (Winter is competitive season, fall and spring training only.)

Please note: There are several athletics-related clubs that do not appear above because their charter does not include "competitive scheduling."  Be sure to look at the entire student organizations club lists to see if your interest is already a club here.  This list can be viewed at: http://studentorgs.umf.maine.edu  You can also contact the Club Sport Commissioners at umf_clubsports@hotmail.com if you would like more information about club sports at UMF.

In addition to club sports, UMF also offers many varsity athletics and intramurals, as well as a broad scope of recreational and fitness opportunities at the Health and Fitness Center!

Skiing and Snowboarding
As you might expect with our proximity to major ski areas like Sugarloaf/USA, Sunday River, and Saddleback Mountain, skiing and snowboarding are HUGE here at UMF. In fact, we're one of the few colleges in the United States to offer an academic program in the ski industry--and ours is outstanding! For more on skiing at UMF, follow the link to our Ski Industry Program.
