Field hockey taken down by USM

Lilly Barry

GORHAM -- The University of Maine at Farmington field hockey team slipped to 1-2 with a 2-1 non-conference loss to the University of Southern Maine today at Paula D. Hodgdon Field.

Lilly Barry (Hermon, ME) tallied the lone goal for the Beavers, who are scheduled to visit Thomas College in non-conference action on Tuesday in Waterville. With the win, Southern Maine improves to 3-3 overall.  The loss drops the Beavers record to 1-2.

After a scoreless 42 minutes, Southern Maine's India Lowe (Gloucester, MA) put her team on the scoreboard with her second goal of the season.  Lowe’s goal came after USM was awarded a penalty corner.  Lowe played the ball to Bethany Bougie (Sanford, E) who sent a long driven pass from the top of the circle for Lowe to redirect in the 43rd minute.  Bougie was credited with the assist.

USM took a 2-0 lead minutes later on Bethanu Schleh’s strike in the 50th minute.  Schleh (Gorham, ME) collected a redirected shot from Lowe in a scramble in front of the net and tapped the ball past the Farmington goalkeeper.

The Beavers answered shortly after Schleh’s goal to cut the USM lead to a goal as Barry tallied her second goal of the season in the 51st minute.  Barry deflected a pass from Alyssa St. Pierre (Jay, ME) for the score.

Farmington goalkeeper Felisha Taylor (Chelsea, ME) played well in the loss making eight saves.

USM goalkeeper Allison Hill (Cape Elizabeth, ME) had a solid effort in goal making four saves and several key defensive clears.
