Field hockey wins NAC opener

Ashley Wentworth

FARMINGTON -- Ashley Wentworth (North Berwick, ME) scored two goals and assisted on another as the University of Maine at Farmington field hockey team opened North Atlantic Conference play with a 5-0 victory over Lasell College today at Prescott Field.

The Beavers (3-3 overall, 1-0 in the NAC) are scheduled to host Simmons College Sunday at noon. The Lasers (2-6, 0-1) are tabbed to take on Thomas College in Waterville Sunday at noon.

Hattie Agnew (Guilford, ME) added a goal and an assist for the Beavers with Lilly Barry (Hermon, ME) and Jennifer Bernhardt (Vassalboro, ME) each tallying a goal. Farmington outshot Lasell 26-5 and took 18 penalty corners to the Lasers' six.

Wentworth set the tone early by carrying the opening possession from midfield and going in for the score 18 seconds into the contest. Lasell followed up the initial score with a Tia Pratt (South Paris, ME) bullet wide and a pair of corners, but the Beavers received an unassisted goal from Agnew at 22:33 and a nice connection from Wentworth to Barry at 24:43 to expand their advantage to 3-0.

After Bernhardt scored off an Agnew pass at 31:55 to give the hosts a 4-0 advantage at intermission, Wentworth knocked in her second goal of the game 2:53 into the second half for the 5-0 final.

Felisha Taylor (Chelsea, ME) and Sarah Brown (Windham, ME) shared netminding duties for Farmington. Taylor did not need to make a save, but Brown booted away bids by Pratt and Natasha Wood (White River, VT) at the start of the second half to preserve the shutout.

Christine Thornton (Canton, MA) stopped 12 shots for Lasell, including a save on a Jessie LaCasse (Barnstable, MA) penalty stroke.
